The League of Extraordinary Women Strikes Again

A Rogue of One's Own by Evie Dunmore

January 25, 2021 by wicherwill 2 Comments

Hmm I feel bad giving this the same rating as the prior entry in the series, Bringing Down the Duke, because while similar this book is so very much better. It is, like the first book, at its heart a romance novel but like Serious and Literary, which you can tell because it gets a proper book release and the cover has the cartoon characters as opposed to a realistic drawing. No one is denying that part of it, there are tropes galore (the dowdy one […]

“I do not wish women to have power over men, but over themselves.”

A Rogue of One's Own by Evie Dunmore

January 21, 2021 by Sophia 2 Comments

I began Dunmore’s books with Bringing Down the Duke (2019) when NPR recommended it last year. I was very happy with it and quickly moved on to A Rogue of One’s Own (2020) this year. The time, place, and characters are familiar from Bringing Down the Duke, where four women worked together for women’s rights and the passage of the Married Women’s Property Act. This time, Lucie is our protagonist. She’s very dedicated to the cause and has been estranged from her family for over ten years. Fortunately, she has a […]

Good and fun historical romance

Bringing Down the Duke by Evie Dunmore

October 31, 2020 by Sophia Leave a Comment

Bringing Down the Duke by Evie Dunmore was a historical romance novel that I first saw on NPR’s Best Books of 2019. I’ve found some fun and different romance novels on this list, and I was happy to try another. And I liked this book. This was one of my favorite romance novels in awhile. It definitely fulfilled all historical romance expectations, but the female characters felt a little more realistic for their time. They weren’t simply women transplanted from the 21st century back in […]

Angry feminist converting a social conservative with reason might be my kink

Bringing Down the Duke by Evie Dunmore

This book has been reviewed a couple of times on this site already. Scoota100 was lukewarm on it while Rachel liked it a lot. I’ll go a bit more in detail in this review in case this helps you decide whether to read it or not. The story follows Anabelle, a country gal working as an unpaid maid for her brother. She is painfully intelligent and is bursting at the seams with frustration over the fact that due to an accident of birth, she’s at […]

A Charming Romp Through Victorian England

Bringing Down the Duke by Evie Dunmore

January 3, 2020 by Rachel 2 Comments

Oh boy, it looks like I have a new author to follow! In her first novel, Evie Dunmore dives into the academic world of Oxford, royalty, and Parliament in the heart of the Victorian era. What follows is an absolutely charming romp into the stifled world of upper-crust society featuring class-crossed lovers.  Our heroine is Annabelle, a young woman who is unmarried and headstrong who finds herself stuck. She gets into the newly formed woman’s college at Oxford thanks to a scholarship sponsored by the […]

Finally trying to learn more about the suffragette movement than what I was shown in Mary Poppins.

Bringing Down the Duke by Evie Dunmore

My friend and I recently went to Book Club night at our local — and amazing — book store, One More Page in Arlington, where they discussed Bringing Down the Duke. We had a fun night with a great group, and hope to be back for a gathering in the future. What was interesting to me was that we all agreed that the book was a quick, engrossing read, and that we all liked it. However, most people agreed they probably wouldn’t read the next […]
