The HEA for Trans Kids folks put together another great bundle of books. All donations go to Trans Lifeline

Winter Wonderland bundle by HEA for Trans Kids

November 29, 2022 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

Yes! It’s book bundle time at HEAs for Trans Kids. This time I’m reviewing just a few of the books in the Winter Wonderland bundle. I want you to have an opportunity to donate your minimum of $25, through December 5, so you can get your own bundle. Hither, Page by Cat Sebastian – I have previously reviewed it here, and it is still excellent. The real scandal is that I haven’t reviewed The Missing Page yet. Part of me wants to say that the […]

Giving the old tropes an update

Her Fake Date Until Midnight by Eve Pendle

April 26, 2022 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

This is a book where I appreciate what the author is doing more than I actually enjoy the book. His Fake Date Until Midnight felt like Pendle took the category romances from the late 1970s – 80s and then gave it all an update. Clara is insecure and a bit of a doormat. She’s also an enormously competent vet and not insecure when it comes to doing her job. The job itself is insecure because her jerk boss is the father of her jerk ex, and […]

Behind in reviews, we are doing a weird omnibus

The ABC Murders by Hercule Poirot

The Alice Network by Kate Quinn

Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge and the Teachings of Plants by Robin Wall Kimmerer

People We Meet On Vacation by Emily Henry

Falling for a Rake by Eve Pendle

May 31, 2021 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

The ABC Murders – *** Picked up on a whim after a recommendation! As I’m also v behind in reviews and somewhat struggling to remember specifics of all the books I’ve read, it’s a perfect opportunity to put into practice my rating scale. Hercule Poirot mysteries are a mainstay in a very specific type of comfort reading, and honestly Christie is a genius for being able to write so many varying tropes in a way that feels connected but fresh. I definitely thought we were […]

Heritage, Legacy, and the Choices We Make

Catch a Falling Duke by Eve Pendle

May 15, 2021 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

Eve Pendle starts Catch a Falling Duke off with a bang when Hugh Ravensthorpe, Duke of Cumbria, discovers his grandfather owned slaves in British Guiana (now Guyana) and that is the source of his family’s wealth. In horror, he flees his family estate. Dairy farm owner, Bea Fenton, is on her way to a job fair hoping to find the man her mother wrote to many years ago. They encounter each other at an inn and their one night stand becomes travelling together. She thinks he’s […]

Get your socialist, anti-racist dukes here!

Catch a Falling Duke by Eve Pendle

May 11, 2021 by Nart 3 Comments

This is the conclusion of Pendle’s Fallen trilogy and a sort of farewell to historical fiction. It is by far the strongest of the 3 books but can be read as a standalone. Plot: Hugo just inherited a Dukedom. Turns out that much of the wealth of that dukedom was built on the backs of slaves. Slavery had ended 50 years prior, but it still feels wrong to continue to benefit from such a vile thing, especially while the people who were victimized by it got […]

Fallen women and the happy endings they deserve

Once a Fallen Lady by Eve Pendle

May 11, 2021 by Nart 1 Comment

There are simply not enough novels about women that have been thrown away by society getting their happy ending while also making the world a better place. Plot: Happening concurrently with the events of Falling for a Rake, this book follows Lydia, the young woman who our hero Lord Markshall had impregnated and then promptly abandoned. She has since bought herself a new life as a respectable widow in a tiny town. She’s been doing the best she can, but she’s had to rely on […]
