Born under gray skies, painting the sun

To See Clearly: A Portrait of David Hockney by Evan Turk

May 8, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Who is David Hockney? I had no idea before reading To See Clearly: A Portrait of David Hockney. Or at least, I might have known the paintings (this picture book shows Hockney’s style interpreted by the author/illustrator Evan Turk), but not the name. The story is straight forward. Turk says, “David did this, that and the other thing.” He we “here, there, and someplace else.” However, there are a few facts that are tossed out, sit down, and say, “Whatcha gunna do about it?” Such […]

Hello Moon, It’s me!

hello, moon by Evan Turk

December 8, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I thought that hello, moon was going to be something sappy. Now, I do not mind something sweet, but when it is sappy sugary? I am not as quick to like it. However, Evan Turk’s picture book was sweet but not over the top. Oh, sure we have a little kid saying Hello to the Moon, but honestly, who has not done that at least once? And it is countered by the fact that not only are you having an emotional moment between child and […]

If glass work is men’s work, why did one woman revive the lost art of millefiori?

A Thousand Glass Flowers: Marietta Barovier and the Invention of the Rosetta Bead by Evan Turk

February 2, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I have a ton of reader copies that are picture books. The great thing about them is you can read one or two (or three) at lunch. This particular picture book, A Thousand Glass Flowers: Marietta Barovier and the Invention of the Rosetta Bead took a little longer than usual. Partly because of that really long title! However, once you get into Evan Turk’s story, you know it was worth it. As a child of the 15th century Italy, Marietta was fascinated by her father’s […]

Come on a trip across country

You are Home: An Ode to the National Parks by Evan Turk

May 31, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

You are Home: An Ode to the National Parks by Evan Turk is an amazing picture book that boarders on an art book that captures the feelings, places, colors, animals and people of the national parks of the United States. It is a poetic story that has the reader flow across the pages seeing what makes the wild of the parks wild, bold and free. The authors afterwards cover not only the authors own personal journey and connection to the national parks he has had […]

If there is a whale, there is a way

Song for a Whale by Lynne Kelly

Heartbeat by Evan Turk.

February 25, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I was a bit disappointed with the end of Song for a Whale by Lynne Kelly. I would have liked Iris (our hero of this adventure) to have done something other than what she did at the end. While it was understandable the choice she made (as her options both had valid arguments), her choice was in line with the theme of going out on a limb, out of our comfort zone and trying something new. Kelly has written a well written and fairly non-preachy […]
