Twistin the Night Away

The Skeleton Key by Erin Kelly

August 10, 2023 by Owlizabeth 3 Comments

Last night, I woke up at 3:30 with a warm flush (being a middle aged woman is aces, y’all) and as I was fanning myself on the sofa, I grabbed my book for the usual 20 minutes or so until my temperature made sense again. I’d been reading this for a couple of days, and I was liking it but I didn’t think it’s be a problem to set it back down and so I could finish getting my night’s sleep. Reader, I’m sure you […]

A literary murder mystery that didn’t quite live up to my expectations.

The Skeleton Key by Erin Kelly

January 30, 2023 by narfna Leave a Comment

I was doing so good in the first of January at being on top of my reviews, and then I hit this book, and the mehness of it has caused a back-up that I’m trying to get back under control before February hits. Anyway, I was really excited about this book, but it didn’t quite do it for me. It was perfectly fine! But I will never read it again (a litmus test I have been using more and more when deciding if I want […]

Bad things happening to whiny unlikeable brats

The Poison Tree by Erin Kelly

February 5, 2019 by Bothari43 Leave a Comment

To make a story about unlikeable characters work, I think either the writing has to be astounding, or the mystery has to be super-engrossing. This book, told in two timelines, has whiny bratty characters, decent writing, and an aggravating, strung-out-too-long mystery. Sigh. Young Karen is a semi-uptight college student, rooming with the popular girls and having a vanilla life. Then she meets Biba, a hippie aspiring actress, and her brother Rex, who serves as sort of a safety net/babysitter for his wild child sister. Karen […]

Attention, fans of Tana French!

I was all set to recommend this book wholeheartedly, but it falters in the last five pages or so, which is SO unfortunate. It was SO GOOD up till then. I will definitely check this author out again, to see if she can stick the landing, because the writing and the story was grand.   The MacBride family is a well-off, well-established academic family: father Rowan the dean of the local prestigious prep school and mother Lydia a local judge. Their children are smart and […]
