She’s stolen Spiderman’s theme song (kinda) and talks to squirrels

The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl: Powers of a Squirrel by Ryan North

December 28, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I am hoping to be able to get at least one more review in after this one, as I would not want to have my last review be a negative one. Of course, since there are only three more days… I am not holding my breath. I was so VERY VERY VERY excited (if you have not guessed) about a superhero that was part squirrel/part girl. (I am easily distracted by shiny objects, squirrels, books in general and books that happen to have a shiny […]

Squirrel Girl continues to delight with choose your own adventure, dating drama, and computer science! (bonus review from Ysakitty)

The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl Vol. 4: I Kissed a Squirrel and I Liked It by Ryan North (writer), Erica Henderson (artist), Jacob Chabot (artist)

Squirrel Girl a.k.a. Doreen Green is at the top of my favorite superhero list and I love sharing her with people unfamiliar with this awesome heroine.  My daughters look up to her and you couldn’t ask for a better role model.  In this fourth graphic novel collection there are two particular issues that stand out for their uniqueness in my (albeit limited) comic reading.  The book starts with a choose your own adventure and ends with an issue devoted entirely to using computer science.  In […]

In which Squirrel Girl and puns are not enough

The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl: Squirrel You Know It's True by Ryan North and Erica Henderson, et al

February 17, 2019 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

What do you get when you try to write a story with no main plotline, and instead focus entirely on a bunch of hardly connected side stories? The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl: Squirrel You Know It’s True is what. I should have known I wouldn’t like this much since the first volume annoyed me, but I wanted to see if things got any better; they did not. My biggest problem with Doreen and her companions (now she has several, and I’m not totally sure how […]

The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl, Vol. 1: Squirrel Power by Ryan North & Erica Henderson

January 15, 2019 by narfna Leave a Comment

I think I actually got this book free from Amazon. They sent me an email for some reason saying, here, pick a free book! I don’t remember why, but this was the one I picked. I potentially imagined this and actually bought the book while it was on sale, but either way, I’ve had it on my Kindle app for a while. (P.S. Reading comics on your Kindle app is surprisingly great. I still prefer hard copies so I can get as close to the […]

Where in I gush about Squirrel Girl, again

August 27, 2018 by Dome'Loki 2 Comments

Just like my mix-up with Ms. Marvel, I accidentally skipped a book and read volume 3 of The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl: Squirrel You Really Got Me Now before reading volume 2, Squirrel You Know it’s True.  Fortunately, missing two did not affect my enjoyment of three, as both books have contained story lines.  However, catching up by reading two did give me a few “ah ha” moments of now understanding references in three. All three Squirrel Girl graphic novels, that I have read so far, written by Ryan […]

I wish I had the boundless optimism of Squirrel Girl

August 17, 2018 by Dome'Loki Leave a Comment

The collaboration between writer, Ryan North, and artist, Erica Henderson, has created the current incarnation of Squirrel Girl, a favorite superhero in our household.  Doreen Green, a.k.a. Squirrel Girl, is a second year computer science student and a superhero (with powers of a Girl and the powers of a Squirrel) who has teamed with the Avengers.  With her cheerful demeanor, boundless optimism, and determination to talk things out with villains, she also is the perfect antidote to grim dark superheros.   In the third volume of […]
