A really good fantasy debut, with one glaring flaw.

The Justice of Kings (Empire of the Wolf, #1) by Richard Swan

February 15, 2023 by narfna Leave a Comment

This was promising! I’ve had my eye on it since it was published, and an audio sale at Libro.fm finally gave me the incentive to pick it up. I was originally reading The Pariah by Anthony Ryan at this spot in my February TBR, but listening to that book was a better sleep aid than it was a story*, and after only a couple of hours of attempting to listen, I swapped it out for this one, and that was a great decision. I particularly […]

The Lost Metal by Brandon Sanderson

Good book. Good series. Five stars. My brain when trying to get up the willpower to review this book beyond those first three sentences: I just, when I have feelings about a book and I turn my thinky brain off a little bit while reading, it’s then hard for me to articulate all the big emotions with my tiny words because the wrong part of my brain was in charge for that. I am always putting this part of my brain in charge, and let’s […]

Fool's Quest (Fitz and the Fool, #2) by Robin Hobb

December 31, 2022 by narfna Leave a Comment

“I found myself speaking softly as if I were telling an old tale to a young child. And giving it a happy ending, when all know that tales never end, and the happy ending is but a moment to catch one’s breath before the next disaster.” Seriously, at this point—the middle book of a trilogy that is itself the penultimate book in a sixteen book epic saga of a series—it is virtually impossible to talk about anything in a review that won’t spoil SOMETHING, so […]

I just couldn’t do it anymore.

The Wandering Fire (The Fionavar Tapestry, #2) by Guy Gavriel Kay

December 30, 2022 by narfna 8 Comments

I have done something now that I almost never do, and that is give up on a fantasy series. There is only one more book in The Fionavar Tapestry for me to read, and it’s not even that long compared to the books I’m used to tackling in this genre, but I just couldn’t do it anymore. The idea of reading that book filled me with dread and despair. When I was reading the first book in this series, even with how much the genre […]

A very promising first novel, and a fun time!

The Stardust Thief (The Sandsea Trilogy, #1) by Chelsea Abdullah

December 13, 2022 by narfna Leave a Comment

I ended up liking this book quite a bit. It was a tiny bit rocky for me at first—it felt like it was falling into some first novel traps—but by the end I was really into it, and I’m definitely finishing out the trilogy. The blurb makes it seem like Loulie—a young woman in her twenties who goes by the Midnight Merchant, because she sells magical relics in the black market—is the only protagonist. But we’ve also got two more! I appreciated that depth of […]

A big disappointment.

The City of Dusk (The Dark Gods, #1) by Tara Sim

November 21, 2022 by narfna Leave a Comment

On the surface, I can’t really point to any specific reason for my low rating here, so you can write this review off as this simply being the wrong book for the wrong reader, if you want. I do want to say up front that the complaint I’m seeing from most people is that this book “reads like YA”, whatever that means. I don’t agree. This is an adult fantasy book. The characters are younger adults, like age eighteen to mid-twenties, but the writing itself is […]
