This series is officially the most batshit thing I’ve ever read.

Temple of the Winds (The Sword of Truth, #4) by Terry Goodkind

October 16, 2015 by narfna 34 Comments

Definitely the worst of these books yet. I almost one-starred it, but the main thing that was making me want to do that was semi-addressed by the end, so I don’t think this series has quite reached the point of untenable badness just yet. (And I want to save the one star, because I’m pretty sure there is much worse to come.) Lately I’ve been forcing myself to write reviews immediately after finishing books, but I made an exception with this one because a) I needed […]

An underwhelming collaboration from some greats

July 6, 2015 by alwaysanswerb 1 Comment

Disclaimer: I received this book through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Black Trillium was first published in the early nineties, a joint effort of three respected fantasy authors now turning their collective attentions toward a trio of three royal sisters who are fated to restore balance to the world. It’s now being republished with a neat new cover but, unfortunately, the formulaic story with three heroines who may as well be stock characters for all of the depth they do not possess is […]

Reading a genre classic for the first time. I have thoughts.

June 23, 2015 by narfna 9 Comments

Firstly, I liked this, I really did. I am completely susceptible to these kinds of stories, and Jordan seems like a smart and enthusiastic kind of writer guy. However, a lot of this didn’t work for me, and I have lots and lots of thoughts, although I don’t know how many I will be able to remember and/or actually articulate in this space. I consider myself pretty well-read in terms of the fantasy genre. I’ve read a little bit of everything, and I’m determined to […]

A re-read of Dragons.

June 6, 2015 by narfna 5 Comments

On my second time through this book, I have lots and lots of thoughts. Be warned, this is not so much a review as a series of reactions, mostly broken up by character, so spoilers ahoy. Ye’ve been warned, matey. (I have no idea why I’m suddenly a pirate.) Back when I first read this book in 2011, I came to it fresh off my first re-read of the first four books, which I had devoured in the space of about a month. I was also super […]

Emotionally and historically epic.

March 19, 2015 by alwaysanswerb 2 Comments

The Lions of Al-Rassan is an incredible book that’s inspired by the religious and political conflict that marked Moorish Spain. It follows several characters from three at-odds religious groups: the Kindath (based on Jews), Jaddites (based on Christians) and Asharites (based on Muslims.) Though the religions as described in the novel bear no real-life similarity to their analogous counterparts, and the particulars of history don’t entirely line up with the events described in the book, GGK’s alternate imagining still captures the ideological turmoil that was rampant […]

An epic fantasy anthology, cherry-picked from other sources.

February 28, 2015 by narfna 2 Comments

This was a pretty great anthology. I was probably destined to like it because it’s pretty hard for me to dislike most kinds of fantasy. This is also different than some anthologies because the editor didn’t commission pieces for this book, but collected them from other already published sources. I sampled a lot of authors I’ve been meaning to try for some time, although I’m annoyed that some of the stories occur halfway through a series or something like that. If you like Epic fantasy […]
