I pity books that follow amazing reads, it’s very hard to be fair to them

February 28, 2016 by melanir Leave a Comment

Wolf Justice by Doranna Durgin is a completely mediocre book, there’s nothing particularly bad but neither is there anything spectacularly good. And reading it right after The Night Circus means that it suffers a bit by comparison. It’s a very quick, light read but it just doesn’t do much to distinguish itself from the bulk of generic fantasy. This is the sequel to Touched by Magic, but only in the sense that it has the same characters and not in the sense that it continues the […]

A surprise book published without any fanfare whatsoever, because Brandon Sanderson is the Beyoncé of epic fantasy.

February 18, 2016 by narfna Leave a Comment

Brandon Sanderson is ridiculous. He’s all, here’s a surprise novella, and no big deal, the entire thing is made up of such game-changing ridiculous nonsense, you won’t even think it’s real as you’re reading it! You know, just been writing it since 2004 and stuff. It only gives you the most information on the Cosmere that has been released yet. It only changes a shit ton of stuff we assumed about the original trilogy and the Wax and Wayne books. NBD. Make no mistake here. […]

Apparently I’m too old for this book.

February 12, 2016 by melanir 16 Comments

I did not read this when I was in my teens, and I’m afraid my reading experience suffered for that. I hated everything about this book, from the plodding storyline to the writing to the cardboard characters. Nothing worked. The Sword of Shannara is often written off as a Lord of the Rings copy, and while I didn’t like the book I don’t think that’s especially fair. It absolutely has similarities and I can see where that criticism is coming from, but I don’t think […]

I was into this before Hipsters ruined my ability to revel in my early adoption of a pop culture staple.

February 11, 2016 by ingres77 2 Comments

First things first: I’m going to be that person. I first read A Game of Thrones in 1998, and I was primed for the experience. I cut my teeth on Tolkien before devouring all the epic fantasy I could get my teenage hands on. David Eddings, Terry Brooks, Robert Jordan, Tad Williams, Terry Goodkind…..I thought that these series represented what the fantasy genre was. I’d never even heard of Gene Wolfe. I’d never imagined that something like A Game of Thrones could exist. Which seems […]

I can teach you how to bottle fame, brew glory, even put a stopper on death.

January 29, 2016 by melanir 6 Comments

This is a well written fantasy novel, the world building is very well thought out and presented nicely, the characters are well rounded and interesting. This book should have been catnip for me, and yet it was a chore to read. I was stuck in a blizzard and I still had trouble forcing myself to read this one. I just found myself so bored by it. I’d be reading a passage and my mind would start to wander to other things. I had the same issue […]

A spoiler free story about my journey to the Dark Tower

January 8, 2016 by thewheelbarrow 5 Comments

Wow!!!  But before I get into the real review, I must discuss my 2015.  Feel free to skip ahead but you’ll miss out on the ride. I decided to read the Dark Tower series last year.  I set my ambitions high and planned to read the entire DT universe and all books that tied in to the series.  I counted 27 of those books and I thought that I would have a very Stephen King year.  I was not a fan of Stephen King before, […]
