My favorite of these yet, but I can see the story starting to creak . . .

October 31, 2016 by narfna 2 Comments

Wow, it only took me eight days to read this. I feel like I was reading it forever. Actually, that’s not always a bad thing to say, though it certainly sounds bad. Sometimes I feel that way about a book if it’s a slog, but sometimes I feel that way if I was really sucked into the world and I’m having trouble pulling my head out of it again. I think this may be more of the latter than the former, here, though the book […]

I tried real hard for this not to be my Double Cannonball, but here we are. This is the universe we all have to live in.

The Dragon Reborn is by far the best one of these books yet. Jordan is clearly getting his feet under him writing-wise (although I know this will start changing for the worse around book five or six, depending on who you talk to), and a lot of the things that annoyed me in the first and second books are either gone or much softened here. I’m long past thinking this is a LOTR clone. He does make one puzzling choice that I feel sort of […]

Second verse, same as the first.

At another time, I might have given this book a full four stars, but I’ve been on a streak of reading really great books lately, and this ended up feeling overly long, as well as frustrating due to some plot decisions that I just hate, even if I get why they’re there. This is the second in Hobb’s Farseer trilogy, and for me unfortunately, a lot of it felt like a replay of conflicts and events from the first book, only on a widening scale. […]

Does *anyone* who’s read this book think Richard is a hero?

May 11, 2016 by narfna 8 Comments

I’m about to get all up in this book’s craw for some terrible choices on the part of the author, and the part of his characters, but I would like to state up front that I am not opposed to characters making choices that are morally questionable. If characters–especially “the good guys”–don’t mess up every now and again, we usually find them flat or boring. What I AM opposed to is characters making morally questionable choices without either the characters or the author bothering to […]

Not quite what I was expecting, but I like!

April 10, 2016 by narfna 2 Comments

I’ve been meaning to read this series for yearrrrrrs, and I finally got around to it. It was . . . not what I was expecting! I mean, right away it’s pretty hard not to notice it’s in first person POV, which is still incredibly rare in epic fantasy, and I think dangerous because it’s so hard to pull off. But I quickly adapted to it, and think it works well here. I still think a nice third person POV lends a storyteller quality that […]

Two down, only twelve more to go!

March 15, 2016 by narfna Leave a Comment

Objectively for me (which I realize is a contradictory statement), this is a three star book. It has some major problems. But . . . I just can’t resist the siren call of an immersive fantasy world, and unlike the first book in the series, which failed to capture my imagination, this one did. So I’m giving it the fourth star, for the potential I see in the series, and for giving me that good old fantasy world buzz. First, the good stuff, the most […]
