Three books in a row, this series continues to be ridiculously good.

December 30, 2017 by narfna Leave a Comment

It has never before taken me longer than a week to read a Brandon Sanderson book, and that’s including the previous two 1,000+ page behemoths in this series. But it took me almost three weeks to get through Oathbringer. This more than anything is proof that reading a book fast does not necessarily mean that it’s good, and reading one slowly doesn’t mean you don’t enjoy it. That’s a new thing for me. Usually I inhale books like I do my food, fast and without mercy. […]

Even better the second time through.

Re-reading this was such a good idea. I didn’t re-read Way of Kings before I read this in 2014, and that was probably a mistake. I picked up a lot of detail on this read that I didn’t the first time because #1 was so fresh in my mind. Also, it turns out I had forgotten nearly everything that happens in this book. Like, it was just gone, like I was reading the book for the first time again (and how many times have I loved a […]

I can’t emphasize enough how good this book and this series are.

So I deleted my original review of this book on Goodreads (but not on CBR) because I’ve never been happy with it. I never felt like it fully conveyed what I was trying to say. Heck, I’m not sure I even knew what it was that I wanted to say! I remember thinking this book was so dense and a little impenetrable, and now upon my first re-read, I’ve got none of that. This time around, I sunk right into this world like it was […]

“The trip has been long and the cost has been high, but no great thing was ever attained easily. A long tale, like a tall Tower, must be built a stone at a time.”

I’ve been sitting on this review for months, and have decided I’m going to take the easy way out and not say all the things I could about this last book in Sai King’s Dark Tower series. For the most part, I have loved reading this series over the past year. It’s had it’s ups (books two and five) and downs (books one and four), but on balance is one of the most imaginative, terrifying, satisfying things I’ve ever read. I will definitely be revisiting […]

How many more books until Brandon Sanderson? Ohhhh, it’s four. That’s so many.

My crawl through this series continues. To be honest, I’d optimistically hoped that I’d be able to finish it by the end of 2017. I was in a good position to, having already read the first five books. Nine books in twelve months? Easy peasy. Except . . . each book has gotten progressively harder to get through. Less and less happens. The flaws stand out more as the plot thins. I’ve gotten through three of these books in ten months. Even if I manage […]

The least terrible thing I’ve read from Terry Goodkind in years.

September 7, 2017 by narfna 2 Comments

Well, this was kind of clumsy, but I actually liked it? I’ll be honest, I’ve had such poor experiences with the last couple of Sword of Truth books, I expected more of the same here, and went looking for it. But this ended up being pretty harmless, and by the end, it actually had me engaged. Well, as engaged in this series as I have ever been, (which, by the way: engagement peaked in book one). So: haven’t enjoyed anything in this series this much […]
