I like Trash… recycled sustainably

Team Trash: A Time Traveler’s Guide to Sustainability by Kate Wheeler

November 17, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

When I was reading Team Trash: A Time Traveler’s Guide to Sustainability I took a lot of notes, as there were A LOT of details. Things from literally Pompeii to 2021-2022 and how they all relate to sustainability, environmentalism, and the good, the bad, and the really smelly. Kate Wheeler’s story is more than just an environmental story. It shows friendships and how we can work together, get the job done, and learn how the good, the bad and the ugly, or The Pig, the […]

I won’t bite, unless you ask really nice, but these insects might!

Please Don't Bite Me! : Insects that Buzz, Bite and Sting by Nazzy Pakpour

August 16, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Please Don’t Bite Me! : Insects that Buzz, Bite and Sting is actually more of a 3.5  than four rating as there are a few illustrations that were somewhat abstract. The first one was the mosquito being shown biting  a victim. The body, head, and everything else did not look real, therefore, it all blended together. The text, on the other hand, is good. Straight forward, covering a few pages for each insect and covers several pieces of the puzzle of that particular insect. And […]

Picture book round up part… I’ve lost count

The Mighty Pollinators by Helen Frost

Too Much!: An Overwhelming Day by Jolene Gutierrez

Steve Irwin by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegar

July 28, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Helen Frost will have a new pollen book at the end of March-early April 2024 called The Mighty Pollinators. No, this is not a book and/or graphic novel about a new DC or Marvel movie of superheroes, but it is a book about the critters, insects, buggies, and even the wind, and how they make your garden, flowers, and more, grow. This is all done with fairly shorter poems that allow for the facts to be presented, but also in a fun and quick manner. […]

Music and trash

The Girl Who Heard the Music: How One Pianist and 85,000 Bottles and Cans Brought New Hope to an Island by Mahani Teave and Marni Fogelson

July 14, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Mahani Teave grew up on Rapa Nui, also known as Easter Island. And book report time: she was curious and precocious. She would learn to play piano, would amaze people with her talents, would learn in and travel Europe in her concerts, and eventually come home to help her people and beloved home. All of this is wrapped up in a poetic and romantic setting. Teave and Marni Fogelson create a story that is interesting and educational, but has a few small gaps in the […]

Celebrate good times, come on

Hello Sacred Life  by Kim Krans

June 27, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I counted Hello Sacred Life has less than 35 words. Therefore, how does one write a 250-word review of the book by Kim Krans? You focus on one thing: the artwork. But first the quick review of the story. The story is not a story. It is a mantra. A meditation of sorts. You say, “Hello sacred…” and fill in with sun, earth, moon, children, water, fire, air, space, light, dark, and finally, life. The end. The artwork, on the other hand is just as simple, […]

This elephant didn’t fly but did help save a village

Bandoola: The Great Elephant Rescue by William Grill

May 27, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Bandoola: The Great Elephant Rescue has a mixture of styles. I mean, while this is a non-fiction story about James Howard Williams and an elephant name Bandoola, it is also written as a fiction story. There are facts about elephants, what they eat, etc., as well as what is used and done of the teak plantation. The story is a bit controversial as it does depict the fact elephants in Myanmar were used to harvest the teak for sale around the world. It mentions some […]
