“It’s way past bedtime o’clock . . . . but somebody can’t sleep.”

Love Monster and the Scary Something by Rachel Bright

December 6, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Love Monster and the Scary Something by Rachel Bright stars the Love Monster from 2013’s Love Monster and 2015’s Love Monster and the Last Chocolate and 2014’s Love Monster and the Perfect Present. This time Love Monster is getting ready for bed, but no matter how hard they try, they cannot get to sleep! And as it gets later and later, Love Monster starts to hear sounds. Which, thankfully, can be figured out quickly enough. That is, until that one sound they cannot figure out. […]

Stunning illustrations and a story about a special friend

Little Mole’s Wish by Sang-Keun Kim

November 29, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Contains spoilers Little Mole’s Wish is a cute story, but also is a bit sad. This is especially true for the almost end. I am not sure how a child might take the fact there is a loss, but suddenly, “poof” the lost person is back. However, Sang-Keun Kim’s illustrations are lovely. Kim’s illustrations are just adorably comfortable. They are softly colored and perfectly detailed without being over-the-top. They are even slightly fuzzy, but not in any negative way. They just show how calm and […]

One Not So Perfect, Perfect Day

Saturday by Oge Mora

November 13, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Saturday by Oge Mora is a brightly colored, slightly predictable ending, but over all a sweet story. This would be a good book to read if your own perfect Saturday plans had a few (or several) glitches to it. This is a cozy mother and daughter story. Ava waits all week for Saturday as her other works the other days of the week. We do see the names of the days spelled out for us, therefore, there is a little education tossed in, but the main story […]

No need to fret Ruby

Ruby Finds a Worry by Tom Percival

September 19, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Mornings are when I do some of my best reading as I have a task that allows me to wander the story without customers being around. And the other morning a display at the bottom of the steps had a few books where authors were coming, seasonal books and this brightly colored green and yellow book called Ruby Finds a Worry caught my eye. Picking it up I found Tom Percival created a book where I like the illustrations and the concept is nice. The […]

Nature, love, loss, magnolia flowers and friendships

Pilu of the Woods by Mai K. Nguyen

August 27, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

**possible spoilers** I read Pilu of the Woods by accident. I was looking at graphic novels and meant to just look at it, but it got into my purchase pile. And even though it was a surprise find, I strongly recommend Mai K. Nguyen and their graphic novel about loss, family, grief and coming to terms with it all. In fact, so much so that I am planning on donating my copy to my library in honor of a friends first grand-baby. (Which I know […]

Sometimes you find a poem, sometimes it finds you

Daniel Finds a Poem by Micha Archer

August 12, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Daniel Finds a Poem by Micha Archer is almost a poem itself. It has some great illustrations that pop off the page. The colors (especially on the very last page) tell the story boldly. The idea of what a poem is more modern, flowery and more based in nature. While any age can have it read to them, due to the fact Daniel’s story is just his adventure to find what a poem is, the older child might appreciate the fact that a poem can […]
