The Vagina Bible: The vulva and the vagina - separating the myth from the medicine by Dr. Jen Gunter

October 25, 2019 by Malin 3 Comments

Official book description: Does eating sugar cause yeast infections? Does pubic hair have a function? Should you have a vulvovaginal care regimen? Will your vagina shrivel up if you go without sex? What’s the truth about the HPV vaccine? So many important questions, so much convincing, confusing, contradictory misinformation! In this age of click bait, pseudoscience, and celebrity-endorsed products, it’s easy to be overwhelmed-whether it’s websites, advice from well-meaning friends, uneducated partners, and even healthcare providers. So how do you separate facts from fiction? Obstetrician […]

Unf*ck Your Habitat: You're Better than Your Mess by Rachel Hoffman

May 23, 2019 by faintingviolet 4 Comments

I’ve intended to read this book for some time. Down in the depths of my depression fellow Cannonballer Siege mentioned on Facebook one of Rachel Hoffman’s tips to Unf*ck Tomorrow Morning – put a little toilet cleaner in the bowl before bed. It was such a small thing, but cleaning my bathroom had become my Impossible Task and it helped get that under control that week and lift the cloud of depression just a little bit.  I knew instinctively that any author who would a) […]

“It’s a truth universally acknowledged that when rich people move into the hood, where it’s a little bit broken and a little bit forgotten, the first thing they want to do is clean it up.”

I like that Ibi Zoboi didn’t call this a “retelling” of Pride and Prejudice. She’s going with the term “remix.” That seems to fit a little better, because while the main plot is pretty similar, there are lots of little things that don’t quite fit into a strict retelling. What Zoboi did instead was take a story that most of us already know, flip parts of it around, and make it her own. And it really worked for me. Zuri Benitez was born and raised […]

Promising Series Start with Some of the Usual First Book Challenges

August 21, 2018 by Jen K 2 Comments

For Two Heads Are Better Than One, emmalita and Jen K chose to read and review Rebecca Roanhorse’s Trail of Lightning, the first in The Sixth World series.  In order to make this simpler, we are pulling the Amazon description for the plot summary, and then going into our thoughts below that!

He may be able to turn a phrase, but I’m thinking Hemingway isn’t for me

October 18, 2017 by faintingviolet 5 Comments

A few weeks ago, I put out a plea on my Facebook page – I had overlooked choosing a book for this year’s Banned Book Week. While emmalita sang the praises of This One Summer a book I already had on my to read list (which I did read that week), another friend gamely suggested that I read A Farewell to Arms since he was reading it as well. I checked out the audio offerings, and decided to give it a go since John Slattery […]

How do you double a Yugo’s value? Put gas in the tank.

May 13, 2017 by octothorp 2 Comments

I picked this book up after fellow cannonballer Emmalita mentioned it as an example of my favorite genre: the failure narrative. I absolutely adore reading about fiascos and how they came to be, and my fellow pajiban steered me right in recommending it. The book is an interesting exploration of how the eponymous car came to be a national punchline. I know nothing about cars aside from what Jeremy Clarkson, James May, and Richard Hammond tell me, and as I was in single digits during […]
