An earlier novel by a favorite author

The Lola Quartet by Emily St. John Mandel

July 9, 2023 by KimMiE" Leave a Comment

CBR15 BINGO – Relation”Ship”, for the relationships between four high school friends and their families, both known and unknown I suspect I’m like most readers in that I first encountered Emily St. John Mandel when I read her brilliant and heart-aching Station Eleven. Since then, I’ve eagerly awaited her new novels and, having caught up on those, I finally turned to her earlier works. The Lola Quartet, published two years before Station Eleven, is the story of a group of high school friends in Florida who […]

What Is Reality?

Sea of Tranquility by Emily St. John Mandel

May 16, 2023 by Tracy 2 Comments

This was so good! It’s set in the past and the future and jumps around in time. It follows seemingly disparate threads and characters who are tied together by their experiencing an odd event in which there is a flash of darkness and the sound of violin music. A character named Gaspery shows up and talks to each of the people who have experienced this event. There is time travel and conversations about the simulation hypothesis. There are meta elements, like a character who wrote […]

A hotel bartender accepts a billionaire’s proposal to pretend to be his wife. Unbeknownst to her, his financial empire is a giant Ponzi scheme heading for inevitable collapse. That collapse will spiral outward, forever altering the lives of many, like the night manager at the hotel where the billionaire met the bartender, and the shipping executive also present in the bar for their meeting. They and the other investors will never got over the loss of their savings, nor will they ever recover from the […]

We Should Have Seen It Coming

Sea of Tranquility by Emily St. John Mandel

February 7, 2023 by Owlizabeth Leave a Comment

I am a mood reader prone to slumps and I also rely on my public library (and four additional in-state systems who have reciprocal relationships with my county – libraries are a miracle and you should support yours more) so I don’t always get to read the hot new book when it is hot and new. I know this was the big book around here last year, I read the stats post. So I doubt I’m adding anything new to the conversation here when I […]

This Time Tomorrow by Emma Straub

Sea of Tranquility by Emily St. John Mandel

The Candy House by Jennifer Egan

December 29, 2022 by scootsa1000 4 Comments

In case I don’t get around to finishing all the reviews I was hoping to before the deadline…I wanted to make sure to share my thoughts on my four favorite books of the year: Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow; This Time Tomorrow; The Candy House; and Sea of Tranquility. 2022 was an amazing year for books. I preordered Sea of Tranquility and received in on release day. I finished it on release day too. I was a little nervous that I wouldn’t love it quite […]

Sea of Tranquility by Emily St. John Mandel

November 26, 2022 by kfishgirl Leave a Comment

I don’t think I’ve read one of Emily St. John Mandel’s books in a while. I forgot how much I liked her. I just randomly downloaded the Audible app and signed into my sister’s Audible account the other day. It’s actually my Amazon account, so it was really easy to do, and don’t worry – I had her permission. I can’t imagine that she bought this book though. I think maybe I got it at some point for free? Or as a bonus for something? […]
