I hope we don’t wait 7 years for a Book 3

My Favorite Thing is Monsters Book 2 by Emil Ferris

August 4, 2024 by ElCicco Leave a Comment

Cbr16bingo Pride (Emil Ferris is bisexual and several of her characters are LGBTQIA2S+) Book 2 of My Favorite Thing is Monsters (MFTIM) finally dropped this year, 7 years after Emil Ferris’ outstanding and much acclaimed debut graphic novel. As ever the art is stunning — colorful ballpoint pen on lined notebook paper with amazing detail and homages to horror comics on every page. MFTIM is 10-year-old Karen Reyes’ story of events from spring and summer of 1968 in Chicago. It’s the story of her family’s […]

A re-read that holds up

My Favorite Thing is Monsters Book 1 by Emil Ferris

August 4, 2024 by ElCicco Leave a Comment

Cbr16bingo Dreams graphic novel features dream sequences, nightmarish horrors and main character’s dream is to become a monster (werewolf) I reviewed this graphic novel for CBR9 and loved it. The second volume has only just dropped this year and a re-read was needed as I’d forgotten most of the plot over 7 years. This is a story of monsters and horrors, but of course the scariest things are not supernatural but very real and human. Through gorgeous detailed art and skillful storytelling, Emil Ferris creates […]

Let’s smoke that freak!

My Favorite Thing is Monsters by Emil Ferris

June 11, 2019 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

It’s very hard not to be completely taken in by this book. It’s such an obvious labor of both love and obsession, full of heart, full of weirdness, completely self-aware in the most rewarding of ways, and just very good. It’s also a bit intimidating of a book. It’s about 500 pages of near-folio size pages that looks to be scribbled into a series of spiral notebooks. The art style is entirely variable and at times purposely derivative, and the ever-present blue lines of a […]

Thank you, Jenny S!

December 13, 2018 by narfna 7 Comments

Came home to a rather heavy package from Amazon last night, and found that Jenny S had sent me My Favorite Thing is Monsters, and just in time! I have this on my list for next week, and was going to get it out of the library. She also sent me The Drifter, which I’ve never heard of before but will definitely be reading now, and some Mexican hot chocolate, for her family’s tradition of Jólabókaflóðið. (I make all my hot chocolate Mexican anyway, so this […]

Monstrously wonderful

OMG, y’all. This book. Y’all. This. book. Whenever a ton of people tell me I absolutely MUST read a book, I end up getting a little anxious because I’m sure it somehow won’t live up to expectations, and then I’ll get this weird guilt that I must not have “gotten” it and will disappoint everyone by not liking it enough. I’m neurotic, okay? Well, I shouldn’t have had this worry at all with this one. This book is so amazing. It’s empathetic (Ferris clearly understands […]

Are you a good monster or a bad monster?

August 15, 2017 by ElCicco 2 Comments

This incredible graphic novel is Emil Ferris’ first but not, thank goodness, her last. Volume 2 is due out next March and I’ve already pre-ordered my copy. My Favorite Thing is Monsters is a graphic novel that deals with intense issues and features stunning artwork. Set in 1960s Chicago, the novel involves contemporary events, an illness, child abandonment and abuse, a murder with possible connections to Nazi Germany, and an abiding love of fine art and monsters. The fact that it is narrated by a […]
