Beach town meets movie set meets murder mystery

Pretty as a Picture by Elizabeth Little

January 6, 2021 by Jenna Leave a Comment

Marissa probably shouldn’t have taken this job, but she’s worried she’s grown too dependent on Amy, her best friend / director-to-her-editor / roommate. So she moves out of their apartment in LA and asks her agent to book her something. After a whirlwind interview, she’s flown to Philadelphia and picked up by an imposing man who can’t possibly be just a driver (not that being just a driver, there’s nothing wrong with that, it’s just -) and driven to Lewes, Delaware, and despite Marissa’s deep […]

“Beautiful women – they think they can get away with anything.”

September 15, 2016 by Caitlin_D Leave a Comment

You’re going to love this book as much as you hate Janie Jenkins for the first two thirds of it! Jane “Janie” Jenkins was a teenage “It” girl a la Paris Hilton or a Kardashian who discovered her mother’s murdered body with no recollection of the events preceding her discovery. Since she had a tempestuous at best relationship with her mother she the prime suspect and eventually convicted of the crime. Ten years later the lab that processed the scene comes under scrutiny and her […]

Female author + female protagonist = let’s compare it to Gone Girl!

June 30, 2015 by badkittyuno 2 Comments

Actually, Elizabeth Little’s Dear Daughter does have a bit in common with Gone Girl (and Flynn’s other novels) — primarily, that you’ll kind of hate the main character. I will say, however, that Janie Jenkins will grow on you, and I found this novel to be pretty damn compelling. You just have to give yourself about 50 pages to get used to Janie’s voice — I couldn’t stand her at the beginning, but I was rooting for her by the end. “Self-pity is the sun around which we orbit, the great […]

Mother Daughter Relationships Can Be Complicated

April 12, 2015 by Melina Leave a Comment

Ten years after being convicted for the murder of her mother, Jane Jenkins is released from prison due to the mishandling of the evidence.  Instead of going back to Hollywood and living in the spotlight of her notoriety, she instead assumes a new identity and disappears from the public eye in the hopes of finding out the truth behind her mother’s death.  As a teen, Jane wanted nothing more than to be the next Paris Hilton and she set about Hollywood ensnaring men and being […]

And with a mystery about a crazy socialite, that’s cannonball!

December 30, 2014 by competitivenonfiction 6 Comments

This is a very strange novel to finish the cannonball on. I feel like after 4 years of attempting the cannonball, I should have finished on something deep and meaningful. Instead I picked up the good, but not exactly deep, Dear Daughter by Elizabeth Little, the story of a young woman named Janie Jenkins who was convicted of killing her socialite mother ten years ago. Released on a technicality, many still believe she did it and Janie herself isn’t sure what happened that night, but she is […]
