She’s fine but I’m a mess

Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman

July 28, 2020 by ElCicco Leave a Comment

Cbr12bingo Book Club Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine begins with the premise of many a romantic comedy but takes the reader into serious and unexpected territory. Gail Honeyman’s debut novel, which garnered numerous awards, tells the story of 30-year-old Eleanor from her unique and often hilarious point of view as she plans to win over the man of her dreams. Yet Eleanor’s romantic aspirations are only a small part of this entertaining and thought-provoking novel which examines depression, abuse, and the power of true friendship. […]

Lonely Hearts Club

Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman

July 8, 2020 by Wanderlustful 1 Comment

Eleanor Oliphant is a 30 year old accounts worker at a graphic design firm in Glasgow, Scotland.  She is particular, organized and incredibly socially awkward, but without any desire to change herself to be liked- she is, as the title indicates, “completely fine”.  Eleanor’s life is, like her personality, particular and organized- she goes to work and then she goes home, with weekends filled by grocery store pizza and a vodka buzz.  She has no friends or family and as we get to know her […]

Now that fate had unfurled my future, I simply had to find out more about him; the singer, the answer.

This book sneaks up on you. At first it reads like a charming British pop novel about an eclectic and off-center narrator, who were told and briefly shown is a little odd. We know she’s treated as a kind of comical pariah at work, and are given evidence as such early in the novel when she takes a young coworker on a kind of date to a concert and falls head over heels in love (more or less, but way less) with the lead singer […]

Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine – Hard to pigeonhole, great to read.

Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman

Reese Witherspoon’s book club has been on my periphery, it’s been great seeing a beloved actress that I grew up on (I mean…Man in the Moon? Fear? Formative) become such a literary champion and icon.  That said, I enjoy being a contrarian so I’m more likely to eschew something everyone likes then subscribe to it, even though Reese is obviously a goddess, I was hesitant to go all in on her book club recommendations. But after this one, which was her first ever back in […]

Eleanor Oliphant is not at all what I expected.

Despite this book being raved about by so many, and making an appearance on tons of “My Favourite Books” lists, I had no idea what it was about. I picked it up on a whim during a long road trip when I just wasn’t feeling the books that I had packed (THIS is why you always overpack books, people!). From the description on the back cover, I was expecting an easy-breezy, chick lit style book about a quirky-but-loveable character – and initially that’s what it […]

Her Bluntness Made Me Laugh and Cringe in Equal Measure

July 23, 2018 by Jen K Leave a Comment

This novel marked the beginning of the latest review slump/fall behind.  Between this being the type of novel that is always harder for me to review and having read it a time when things got busier for me (more work and in an office with friends which means dinner and lunch plans that don’t involve reviewing), it was a bit too easy to fall behind even as I kept reading. Within the first two pages of the novel, Eleanor describes her normal weekend routine. She […]
