GPS means: Great popsicle skunk. Or Global positioning system. It could be either

Survival Scout V02 Tsunami by Maxwell Eaton III

Survival Scout V03 Lost at Sea by Maxwell Eaton III

Survival Scout V01 Lost in the Mountains. by Maxwell Eaton III

April 25, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I found two books in the Survival Scout series. The first was Survival Scout V02 Tsunami and Survival Scout V03 Lost at Sea by Maxwell Eaton III. These volumes are about Scout and their friend skunk as  they learn about different types of science. The second book is an informative book about tsunamis, the effects and introduction of facts on what to do. And the other is about how Scout’s brother takes them sailing, insults a porpoise and gets them stuck in the ocean. Then […]

Puddles and Penguins

The Noisy Puddle: A Vernal Pool Through the Seasons by Linda Booth Sweeney

No Huddles for Heloise by Deborah Kerbel

April 1, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I write my reviews before I post. I might miss a few things (I am a horrible editor for myself), but I try to organize my thoughts. But when I counted out my review for The Noisy Puddle, it was less than 170 words. To fill the quota I’ve added a fiction book to go with the non-fiction one. Besides, it’s twice the fun in one review! And while many probably will like the first book, if you’re like Heloise, you don’t always follow the […]

Raindrops falling on everything

It Starts With A Raindrop by Sally Garland

March 26, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I almost did not write a review for It Starts With A Raindrop by Sally Garland and illustrated by Aimee Gallagher. This was not because it was bad, or because I didn’t like it, but because it started as a “been there done that” read. It is a poem (slightly romantic and feeling simplistic) about the life cycle of a raindrop and the things it does. You have facts about things (the drop will fall in the puddles, or sand; it will find oceans and […]

The community of solstice

Winter Solstice Wish by Kate Allen Fox and Elisa Paganelli

February 13, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I am not jumping up and down and saying Winter Solstice Wish by Kate Allen Fox and illustrated by Elisa Paganelli (currently available, but I read via an online reader copy) is the best solstice book ever, but I am jumping in to say this is a nice and slightly different approach to the subject. What I have seen for solstice books tend to show more winter scenes and events done to celebrate the seasonal moment. When we find the shortest day of the year, […]

If a tree falls, is that all?

One Day This Tree Will Fall by Leslie Barnard Booth

December 18, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I was looking to see what author Leslie Barnard Booth had on their list of titles after A Stone Is a Story. And there were a few titles. The one that caught my eye was One Day This Tree Will Fall. It looked like their stone book, and therefore I figured it would be similar.  And it was similar, and not just because it was about nature or I read it as an online reader copy even though it is available for purchase/getting. It is […]

A stone is a journey across history

A Stone Is a Story by Leslie Barnard Booth

December 18, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

A Stone Is a Story by Leslie Barnard Booth and Marc Martin is a picture book about how a “stone” is formed. But it is not done with dry facts, but with a more poetic nature. We follow from before time (almost) to today and “you” the reader finding a piece of that original item.  I did not find things WOW, but I did find them enjoyable. If you are looking for a factual book, this does have that at the end, but within the […]
