Marine Life

Meadows of the Sea: The Wonders of Seagrass by Michelle Schaub

November 3, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Overall, Meadows of the Sea: The Wonders of Seagrass by Michelle Schaub is a good story about the ocean with the metaphor of showing how it is like a meadow. This idea makes something that seems unfamiliar and even alien, take on a form that we know and can understand. The poetic nature of the first part (the story) is reminiscent of the ocean flow itself. The fact that the second part (actual factual information) is added on the page allows the book to grow with […]

Talk to the mountain

I Am the Mountain by Steven Weinberg

September 19, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I Am the Mountain by Steven Weinberg is a fun and cute illustration that paints the seasons as seen by a mountain. While good for most ages, this book is broken into four “chapters” (each season) that might be best for an adult lover of art, nature or unique picture books. It might seem easy at first glance, but there are layers and it can be deeper than you would think. Read via an online reader copy but I think I might find a finished […]

The Wheat Whisper or Father of the Green Revolution,

Hero for the Hungry : The Life and Work of Work of Norman Borlaug by Peggy Thomas

June 13, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

While back, an email came into my possession containing the (currently available) reader copy of Hero for the Hungry : The Life and Work of Work of Norman Borlaug  by Peggy Thomas and illustrator Sam Kalda. The first part of the first half was interesting. It gave a nice introduction to the man that was Norman Borlaug. Starting with him as a young farm child to his college years, we see how he would eventually end up in Mexico learning as much as he would […]

Calvin and Hobbes or Jackson and Irwin adventures?

Jackson's Wilder Adventures V02 Dentistry and Dreams, by Sarah Davidson

May 27, 2025 by BlackRaven 1 Comment

I found a series awhile back that I thought was one of the best I had read. It was Jackson’s Wilder Adventures by Sarah Davidson. It was clever and unique. A young boy, Jackson, and his Calvin and Hobbesesque Hobbes, called Irwin the Thylacine, were the perfect narrators. Davidson mixed time travel in a Dr. Who manner with fun educational facts. Granted, there is no actual Tardis (and/or fill in your favorite doctor), just an old cardboard box, but the adventures were as fun. We […]

Just because it is spring, doesn’t mean you can’t read a book about winter things

Brown Girl in the Snow by Yolanda T. Marshall and Marianne Ferrer

May 8, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

September 2025 is the start of the Autumn/Winter release books. And this year (2025) so far has it looking like there will be some terribly hot titles. I am not just talking about whether they have “hot themes” (immigration, new school, historical events) or are from or set in a warm climate, I am talking  about whether they are going to be talked about and if they are going to get noticed and which ones are going to get awards and recognition. And Brown Girl […]

Four books for the price of one review (and a lunch break filled with books)

The Peacock Who Howled with Jackals  by Nahid Kazemi

You Can't Tame a Tiger by Stephanie Ellen Sy

RJ and the Ticking Clock by Ian Duncan

Who Needs the Dark?: The Many Ways Living Things Depend on Darkness by Laura Alary

May 7, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The other day I found a few titles I was interested in via an email newsletter. When I looked them up to see if reader copies online were available, they had thumbnails of the images, but not the full  text. I read these introductions, but was hoping to find finished copies sometime in the future (as they are all summer and fall publications). The next day what to my wondering eyes did appear? It was eight tiny reindeer…. I mean, those four titles I had […]
