A dystopian disappointment

July 20, 2014 by popcultureboy 1 Comment

After ploughing through the biggest of the big books with The Quincunx, I was, as I saw someone put it on Twitter after back to back reading The Luminaries and The Goldfinch, “yearning for a pamphlet”. And what better palate cleanser, I thought, than the opening volume of Stephen King’s epic Dark Tower series? It’s a trifling 210 pages and it’s the opening gambit to a series of books that increase in page count as they do in scope. Bound to be a winner, right? Well, as it turns out, no. As it […]

From Never Sky to Ever Night

May 27, 2014 by Mrs. Taffy Leave a Comment

If you read my review of Under the Never Sky, you know that I said it took me a little while to get into the story. Well, that was not the case with this installment of the series. I finished Through the Ever Night in two days, and am extremely sad that my Nook and Kindle are not working, my local library doesn’t have the third book, and the closest book store is an hour away (and I don’t have two hours free this week […]

A World of Nevers Under a Never Sky

May 24, 2014 by Mrs. Taffy Leave a Comment

I kept seeing this title over and over, in Must-Read lists, in Read-Alike lists, in What-to-Read-Next lists, and in Best-Books-of-____ lists, so I finally broke down and bought it. I admit that I hesitated to purchase it because the reader reviews of the book were mixed.  Some called it the best thing since Hunger Games, while others said it was just a lackluster attempt to capitalize on the popularity of the dystopian novel. The final decision was made after a favorable recommendation from a coworker […]

If everyone belonged to only 1 of 5 categories, which would you be? NONE because that’s ridiculous.

Here’s the next big YA trilogy, the first book of which has already been released to the big screen. It has all the sexy elements a YA dystopian thriller needs to be successful…hot teenagers (going off of the movie trailer a bit on this one)…Ok, wait. Did I just say “hot teenagers”?!? Creepy. I’m way too old to be saying things like that. (I was going to put “waaaaaaaay too old” but no, I’m just “way” too old). Which brings me to my next point, […]

It’s all about Manchee

May 18, 2014 by popcultureboy 5 Comments

Anyone who read my reviews regularly last year will be aware that I have developed something of a book crush on Patrick Ness. He’s a brilliant author and, as some have said of Rainbow Rowell, an author I wish had been around when I actually was a Young Adult, as it would have made my teenage years that much more bearable. He is also bloody good value for money on Twitter, so if you don’t already, you should totally follow him. His live tweeting of […]

Is it wrong to dream for a dystopia?

April 7, 2014 by Robyn Robotron Leave a Comment

I just found out that Wil Wheaton did the audio version of this book (which I will be getting shortly).  That in itself should tell you how awesome it is, but you could still read my review if you want.
