Some time in the not too distant future, a virus sweeps across America. It can be deadly but isn’t always. Those who die sometimes come back as “Reboots,” especially the young. Broken bones now heal in minutes, senses are faster, better, and the Reboots still age and can have babies. There is chaos and panic and hysteria, of course, and eventually a war between the Reboots and the humans. It seems most of America, between the virus and the war, are wiped out. All that’s […]
Get Ready for a Zombie-Punk Infested Battle Royale
‘Zombies and Shit’ follows a group of characters picked out of the poor quadrant of a dystopian future New York, and ditched on a zombie infested island for the televised entertainment of the rich masses. Escape is limited to one seat in a helicopter that will carry the winner to the rich sector as their prize, but who’s going to make it to the chopper? The book is written in third person present tense. This isn’t a narrative choice I come across often and […]
Wherein incest is rampant, for reals, trigger warnings ahoy
I kicked ass at reading this year (151 so far, whaaaaaaat) but totally, totally failed when it came to writing reviews. But I wanted to post at least one because…futility is awesome? I don’t know guys, just go with it. When I first heard about Kate Wilhelm about a year ago, I was inclined to like her. “A female author writing sci-fi in the 60s/70s? Hell yeah, screw Heinlein!” Where Late the Sweet Birds Sang is the third book by Kate Wilhelm that I have […]
Millennials are so screwed if this is our future.
I was surprised to find California by Edan Lepucki on several “Best” lists this year. While I did find it to be an easy, quick read I didn’t find the story itself to be as entertaining or engrossing as many of the reviews lead me to believe it would be. I didn’t regret reading California, but I certainly wouldn’t credit Lepucki with having written “a gripping and provocative debut novel” either. Frida and Cal live in the woods. Alone. In a shack. Apparently the […]
The Hunger Games meets Cube
While my interest was vaguely piqued by the movie trailer, I probably wouldn’t have picked this up if I hadn’t been at LAX waiting for a flight. It was alright, though.
I would totally be Erudite, they’re the ones with all the books.
Beatrice Prior is about to turn sixteen. This is the day when she has to choose which of the five factions in society she wants to belong to for the rest of her life. Beatrice and her brother have been raised in Abnegation, the self sacrificing and selfless people in society. The other four factions are Erudite (the intellectual, who all seem kind of snobby), Amity (the peaceful and apparently the ones who grow all the food), Candor (the honest, they cannot actually lie) and […]
