Fascinating Philosophy and Science in an OK Story

The Quantum Revelations by Stuart Heinrich

September 9, 2025 by Halbs 1 Comment

I’m immensely appreciative of Stuart Heinrich for undertaking quite a project – sharing complex and niche scientific ideas such as physical relativism and quantum cosmology with a general audience of sci-fi/speculative fiction readers in novel form. Think The Celestine Prophecy, but for science! Heinrich has previously published non-fiction articles on similar topics, and The Quantum Revelations is his attempt to integrate these areas of study into fiction. The plot is fun. In the near future, climate change rapidly accelerates past the point of no return. […]

Baby Blue your friends got you

Baby Blue by Bim Eriksson

August 26, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Baby Blue by Bim Eriksson and translator Melissa Bowers was another one of those books I looked at the cover of and said, “Why did I request this?” (As I got it through my library). I don’t remember why, but as I sit here typing this review, I think it probably is getting some attention for the fact it is pretty awesome (if not a “What did I read?” and one of the more odd reads of the year so far) book. I think it […]

Try to look away from the game of living and watching living

Spectators by Brian K Vaughan

August 4, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Spectators by Brian K Vaughan and illustrator Niko Henrichon is a train wreck I could not stop reading. This graphic novel (due late fall 2025) is in the vein of Revival by Tim Seeley and artist Mike Norton, and The Walking Dead but with fewer zombies and more ghosts.  When I finished my reader copy (and in fact through it) I thought it was the most screwed up book I’ve read in a while! DAMN! What an awesome read! There is so much going on […]

“Bad Llama. Level 3. It’s a llama, but it’s bad. If he were human, he’d be covered in prison tattoos and would be hanging out in front of the Circle K hitting on 14-year-old girls.”

Dungeon Crawler Carl by Matt Dinniman

August 3, 2025 by Malin 1 Comment

CBR17 Bingo: Rec’d (I honestly don’t know how many people have raved about this book, on CBR, other review sites on the internet, as well as in my IRL book club) By now, most people who are even vaguely interested in this series probably know what it’s about, but I’ll try to give a brief summary. Carl is wandering around, half-dressed in the snow, looking for his ex-girlfriend’s prize-winning Persian cat, when Earth is suddenly attacked by aliens. All the buildings collapse in an instant […]

A lost world

The Horizon Volume Two by Jh and Abigail Blackman

The Horizon Volume Three by Jh and Abigail Blackman

June 26, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Honestly, I think The Horizon Volume Three contributed to some bad dreams I had after finishing it. I had finished volume two of The Horizon a few days before, and that probably did not help. I had forgotten some of volume one, but at the same time you almost didn’t need it as it was its own story, but if you want to know how The Boy and The Girl meet and a bit of the war and situation the children are facing you should. […]

Heartbreak and the Perils of Propaganda

Sunrise on the Reaping by Suzanne Collins

June 11, 2025 by RouletteGirl Leave a Comment

What can I say about Sunrise on the Reaping that hasn’t already been said more eloquently by the other reviewers of Cannonball Read? I’ll start by quoting a joke I’ve heard repeated on TikTok: Suzanne Collins saw everyone thirsting over Coriolanus Snow after The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes movie came out, and decided to remind us all what a monster he truly is. If she had to do that by torturing our favorite grizzled old alcoholic mentor and breaking all our hearts in the […]
