3.5 stars I can tell this is going to be a very fun comic series to follow, bringing the list of comic series I follow up to 2 (Saga is the other.) The first volume of Bitch Planet is very introductory, as we meet our main Bitches, learn a little of some of their backstories, and get a broad overview of what’s going on at Bitch Planet (a derogatory term for the off-Earth prison, where the actual name is some euphemistic acronym to do with […]

Dear Marissa Meyer, THIS is how you end a dystopian sci-fi series

Spoiler warning! This is the THIRD and final book of the trilogy and it’s going to be impossible for me to review this without referring at least a little to stuff that happened in the previous two books. Hence, this is not a review you want to check out until you are well and truly caught up. Interested in the series? Go forth and start at the beginning, with Red Rising. So readers will remember that when we last left Darrow at the end of […]

Wall-E + The Fault in Our Stars? (A review in which I am right and my husband is stupid.)

March 23, 2016 by Blingle Bells 4 Comments

I loved this book and read it in a few days. I enthusiastically recommended it to my husband, who also enjoys YA dystopia, and was bewildered when he was not that into it. I thought it was scary and sad and funny and nuanced and infuriating. He thinks, so far, that it’s dumb and poorly written. This was turning into the book equivalent of The Dress so I turned to Goodreads to decide who was right because obviously that is a quantifiable right/wrong thing and […]

“If I could put my finger on the moment we genuinely f*cked ourselves, it was the moment we decided that data was something you could use words like believe or disbelieve around.”

3.5 stars The Water Knife is compelling mostly in its premise: the American southwest — featuring primarily California, Arizona, Nevada, and southern Colorado — is basically bone dry. To sustain their urban populations, these states have employed muscle to go on and off the book and secure water rights, which are primarily proprietary channels drawing from the low but still flowing Colorado River. In the wake of decades of sustained drought, those cities and states that haven’t come out on top of the pile are […]

Still alive

February 23, 2016 by alwaysanswerb 3 Comments

The Girl with All the Gifts breathes life into its genre with a fresh angle on the pathology of an outbreak and an ending that I truly did not expect. The story opens at a noticeably unconventional school/dormitory, where the pupils are carefully monitored and restrained when they are not locked in their individual cells. Our primary protagonist, Melanie, is one such pupil, a bright girl of about ten who loves learning, particularly math and stories of Greek mythology. Her favorite teacher, Miss Justineau, encourages […]

The relentless pace continues

4.5 stars This review may contain some spoilers for the first book in the series, Red Rising and some spoilers for this book. You probably shouldn’t read this review unless you’re caught up with the series. Go read the book instead. This book kicks off two years after Darrow won the war games rather spectacularly by taking on the corrupt Praetors and staging a show unlike anything previously seen. He appears to be well on his way to winning more glory for himself and his […]
