3.5 stars Kelsea knows that when she turns nineteen, it is time for her to take her rightful place as Queen, like her mother (who died when she was a baby) and grandmother before her. She has been raised far from civilisation, by two loyal servants, who did their best to prepare her in every way they could for the duty she would be facing. What they have not done is socialise her in any way, she’s barely seen another living soul since she was […]
A perfectly serviceable start to a YA trilogy.
A plague has killed 98% of the world’s population. Eve is preparing for her graduation ceremony from her all-girls school in the middle of nowhere, after which she’ll cross a bridge and begin learning a trade, when she discovers that her teachers haven’t been totally forthcoming with her about the world she lives in or what’s across the bridge. Things I liked a lot about this book: So far there’s not too much of the Chosen One trope, which is a huge YA dystopian trilogy […]
It’s weird to review a book we’ve all read.
What can I say about a book that’s already been read by just about everyone interested in reading it? I read this when it came out six years ago, and it was assigned for my lit class so I read it again. I’ll admit I was annoyed by this at first. I took the class to force myself to read literature I wouldn’t on my own and I don’t have any trouble finding books like The Hunger Games, but I think they just stuck this […]
Hopeful dystopian, how about it?
In this dense and creative thriller, the worldwide apocalyptic event is actually a fungal infection that covers its victims in black and gold markings and causes them to spontaneously combust. That’s a new one, right? The public calls it Dragonscale, “the ‘Scale” for short. Adding the destructive power of fire to an already dystopian environment considerably ups the tension quotient! Our heroine is Harper, a married nurse, who spends the early part of the novel caring for the infected and trying to hold her marriage […]
If by “Legend” you mean “won’t be remembered next week,” sure.
There were two big problems with my experience reading Legend: first, I should have read it five years ago; second, I listened to the audiobook, which was so perfunctorily narrated that the cheesy-ness of the line reading just emphasized how pedestrian the prose and dialogue are. I don’t listen to a lot of audiobooks, but I had hoped to make more of a habit of it since my current job is well-suited for listening to them while I work. Unfortunately, I think there is something […]
Something a bit familiar about this one…
It’s time for the post-vacation reviews. I read (almost) 4 books and the details are getting a bit hazy a few days after my return. This was the first of the week and the least memorable for me. Darrow lives on Mars as a Red, the lowest in the intergalactic caste system. He’s a young married miner, special amongst his people, but oppressed by the powers that be. A tragedy propels him out of his subterranean bubble and into the world of the upper castes, […]
