Unhappy families …

The Dutch House by Anne Patchett

January 18, 2025 by Jen K Leave a Comment

This was a selection for one of my book clubs – even though this isn’t the kind of novel I tend to gravitate towards, I was the one that added “something by Anne Patchett” to our list of potential book club reads because she owns a local book store. Another person then mentioned this one as being on her TBR, so the decision was made. I have heard that the audiobook is worth a listen because Tom Hanks narrates it. I enjoy audiobooks but often […]

The holidays are fucking hard

This Winter by Alice Oseman

December 29, 2022 by carmelpie Leave a Comment

“When people know you’re mentally ill, most people either want to ignore it completely or they treat you like your strange, scary, or fascinating. Very few people are actually good at the middle ground. The middle ground isn’t hard. It’s just being there. Being helpful, if help is needed. Being understanding, even if they don’t understand everything.” ― Alice Oseman, This Winter “I think sometimes,’ says Nick, ‘you’re so scared of being a burden that it makes you terrified to ask for help. But you […]

This Box Contains One Genuine Pet Rock

Swing It, Sunny by Jennifer L. Holm

February 26, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I read the Jennifer L. Holm and Matthew Holm Sunny series of graphic novels out of order. The good thing for the adult reader is that they should be able to pick the story up regardless of where you start. However, for the aimed audience of ages 10 to 14 (maybe ages 8/9 for the stronger reader as there is some context that might be a bit “much” for the sensitive reader) it probably is best to read them in order. Therefore, first up is […]

Nichols tells about the flocks that inspired Flocks

Flocks by L. Nichols

March 14, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Flocks by L. Nichols is an odd little gem that proves you might not get what you expected, but you get what is needed. I am giving it a five as it is a 4.9 due to are a few questions I still have, but over all this is a “comfortable” book, despite the tough subject matter. SPOILER: If you were like me and did a little looking around about the book, you will learn the narrator is a trans-male (before the revel in the […]
