Good Concept That Didn’t Pan Out

February 4, 2017 by Julie 2 Comments

This book was recommended to me by a bookclub friend.  “Lesbian scientists!” she said.  “There’s a drug that makes people see God (or Gods or G-d),” she said.  It sounded like a cool idea, reminding me a little of Nexus by Ramez Naam or some post-William Gibson kind of thing about our modern technology gone just a little too far. My overall experience of reading this book was just “meh.”  The concept did sound pretty interesting and it begins with a character who is a […]

Break down the self, offer yourself up like dust to the universe.

In the Cannonball Read Facebook group, someone awesome posted an article called “The best books of 2016 list you get when you combine 36 “Best Books of 2016” lists.” The Girls is 6th on that list, appearing in 10 of the 36 “Best Books of 2016” lists combined for the “ultimate list.” It’s okay. Here’s what it has going for it: it’s completely real. Here’s what it has against it: it’s not new. The Girls is the story of an older woman reminiscing about that […]

But who in hell was the joke really on?

You know how the school-to-prison pipeline is a thing that people are finally talking about? Welp, back in 1992, this book about a gang of very young men trying to stay alive in Oakland was published, and I totally missed it, and I suspect almost everyone else did, too. It’s a really important topic, and thank goodness people are finally supporting discussion about it in a bigger way. I’m mostly thinking of Anna Deveare Smith’s current Off-Broadway show, but also about it being more prevalent […]

You saved the world two days ago. Time to save it again

Mac Fraser is trying to enjoy lunch with a goblin when a businessman at another table starts freaking out.  It seems that the poor human can suddenly see monsters.  Granted, there are monsters in the restaurant, but regular humans shouldn’t be able to see past their glamours.  Fortunately for Mac (and the monsters), the guy was high and will forget what he saw in a few hours.  Unfortunately for Mac (and the rest of the world), the guy was high on a new drug called […]

Lord of the Flies meets American Psycho meets The Rum Diaries with just a dash of Seven Psychopaths

The world is getting smaller. Thanks to the Internet that unites people across the globe and airplanes that can make journeys in hours that once took years, virtually nowhere on earth in inaccessible. Mostly, that’s a good thing. But for world travelers, I’ve heard this is a real bummer. That everywhere they go, they’re surrounded by Guess jeans and McDonalds. That the terrain is basically spoiled by globalization and no place is unique anymore. But what if there were still a place, hidden away, unknown […]

Demonic boogaloo and the electric slide

February 2, 2016 by ingres77 6 Comments

This book is a hot mess. And I mean that in the best possible sense. *minor spoilers* There’s a dog that wanted half its body shaved so that it could steal food easier. She figured she wouldn’t be recognized that way. Ronald McDonald eats his own intestines. Jennifer Lopez, Morgan Freeman, and (maybe) Fred Durst are in this book – but not really. The main character, Dave, is bitten by a drug named “Soy Sauce” that John, Dave’s friend, got from a mysterious Jamaican. The […]
