I wouldn’t have voluntarily picked this one up, and I won’t pick up the sequels

Children of Fire by Drew Karpyshyn

December 31, 2020 by Aquillia 3 Comments

So Children of Fire was a book club pick. As the title says, it wasn’t one I would have picked up ordinarily, but I was actually intrigued by the premise. And unlike some book club picks (*coughDunecough*) I actually read this one the whole way through. The premise is this: big evil fantasy villain guy, banished to some kind of parallel universe/dungeon thing, wants to come back. So he uses chaos (the magic) to sow four seeds (lol): four children that are ‘touched by chaos’ and […]

Bane III

Siths Have More Fun

Dynasty of Evil (Star Wars: Darth Bane, Book 3) by Drew Karpyshyn

January 21, 2020 by Halbs Leave a Comment

This is the final installment in Drew Karpyshyn’s fun and sometimes surprisingly dark Darth Bane trilogy. I’ve reviewed the first two books in the series, as well, so if this sounds interesting you may want to go back and check those out. Since it’s the end of the trilogy this review will have to be the most vague. I won’t include spoilers not included on the back cover or on the cover art! I’m only a casual fan of Star Wars, but even I am […]

Things Are Dark on the Dark Side

Rule of Two (Star Wars: Darth Bane, Book 2) by Drew Karpyshyn

January 12, 2020 by Halbs Leave a Comment

I recently read and reviewed book one of Drew Karpyshyn’s Darth Bane trilogy, Path of Destruction. It was so fun that I couldn’t put it down, and so I immediately reserved books two and three at various libraries across the area. In true Dark Side fashion I didn’t want anyone getting the books but me. POWER!!! As I mentioned in the previous review, Drew Karpyshyn is probably most famous for his work on the Mass Effect and Knights of the Old Republic video game series. […]

What’s so great about the Jedi, anyway?

Path of Destruction (Star Wars: Darth Bane, Book 1) by Drew Karpyshyn

January 1, 2020 by Halbs 2 Comments

A whole new year of CBR, awesome! I’m excited to find new books and new perspectives from everyone. Last year, in large part thanks to my fellow Cannonballers, I focused more on reading books by authors different from me. Specifically I read more authors of different genders and also more international authors. Most of my favorite reads of the year came from this intentional expansion. This year I’m focusing on what could be called “intuitive reading”. Instead of making a plan and sticking to my […]
