How to Vampire Properly

Deadly Assessments by Drew Hayes

June 8, 2019 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

The Fred the Vampire Accountant series was practically my introduction to Drew Hayes, one of my current favorites. It’s also one of the very few series in which I actually enjoy first-person narration. Deadly Assessments is installment number five, and while many things remain the same, there are some distinct differences. The novel is still structured as a series of closely related short stories, and short stories are not my favorite genre, but these I like. In this case, the adventures pick up right where […]

The fine line between the game and life

Siege Tactics by Drew Hayes

May 26, 2019 by CoffeeShopReader 1 Comment

I have greatly enjoyed everything I have read by Drew Hayes. I even taught one of his novels this past spring semester; I plan to keep it. I enjoyed Siege Tactics, but it just seemed to lack a little something, like the usual sparkle of fun that everything else by Hayes that I’ve read. So, even if what follows seems like a list of complaints, which it kind of is, just to be clear, I really did enjoy this book. It just was slightly a […]

All great journeys start with a single step

Pears and Perils by Drew Hayes

May 25, 2019 by crystalclear 1 Comment

This is one of the first novels that Drew Hayes wrote, and like all of his other work it is completely different from his other stuff.  The basic premise is that three people have won a cash prize and an all-expense-paid vacation from a burger joint contest. The catch is that the money and  “vacation” is in exchange for the winners to be in a promo commercial for their new “Island Burger.” They are supposed to participate in a local island ritual to release a […]

You think you know a guy…

Second Hand Curses by Drew Hayes

March 3, 2019 by crystalclear Leave a Comment

Once again, Drew Hayes has come up with something completely different from his previous work.  This has more of a detective story, well, detective vignettes that come together. So kind of like his Fred, The Vampire Accountant set up.  But we’re in the realms of fairy tales this time.  And it feels a lot darker than his other stuff. The writing brings to mind the old noir detective stories, you know, the ones where you see the silhouette of the guy smoking a cigarette and […]

Super Powereds Year Four, by Drew Hayes

All good things must come to an end

August 1, 2018 by crystalclear 3 Comments

This book is a kind of bittersweet, in that it’s the last one in the main series.  It’s a crazy long four books (well, five if you count the spinoff**) and it truly is the end of a journey.  We’ve seen these characters grow from immature teens to adults who are willing to make tough decisions, and who are tangled in things far beyond them.  The four years (or more) you spend at college change who you are as a person, and we get to […]

Lucky 13 and Heroes are still fun

July 27, 2018 by CoffeeShopReader 1 Comment

Usually by this point with an author, I’ve gotten bored/annoyed or they’ve gotten predictable. This is Drew Hayes book number 13 for me, and no author fatigue in sight. The only other author I can think of with this kind of reading record for me is Terry Pratchett. Drew Hayes is not Sir Terry, but not in a bad way. Even though Corpies is set in the same world as Super Powereds, and includes some character crossover, there’s still enough new characters and situations that […]
