“Likest thou jelly within thy doughnut?”

February 15, 2018 by narfna 10 Comments

Some overall reactions to my re-read of this book: The Gruffs are still great. Just the perfect amount of gravitas combined with ridiculousness. There are still too many fight scenes that go on for too long. (My mind wanders during fight scenes unless something else is going on.) And there are some things in here that read differently when you know what’s coming! Spoilers ahoy. For instance, there are about three references to Harry semi-jokingly noting that Kincaid could shoot him from very far away, […]

Still just a book in this series.

It turns out I didn’t remember most of this book, and I think that’s because, well, it’s not really that memorable? Unfortunately this has turned out to be the one book in the series so far that I haven’t liked more on re-read. In fact, I may have liked it a little less, what with not listening to the audio this time around, and it feeling sort of sloggy. It’s not that what’s here is bad, just, I don’t know . . . not super […]

More Harry Magic

June 22, 2017 by CoffeeShopReader 2 Comments

I read the first in Jim Butcher’s new series and kinda liked it, so I figured I’d check out his other stuff. I read the first Dresden novel, and though it was only ok. Then I saw that multiple people were saying that the Dresden series only gets good after about book 4. My local library does not have the entire series thus far, and the branch near me does not have all of the book in the order I might want them (chronologically). So […]

Lies, Conspiracies, And Magic

May 14, 2017 by BlackRabbit Leave a Comment

It’s for these reasons, as well as the increased confidence Butcher shows in the writing that Summer Knight is one of my favorite in the series, (the rest of which are constantly shifting in rank as they are reread). As a person who likes to start a series in the beginning, it’s startling to consider that this book is probably the best place to enter the Dresden Files series of books if you want a delicious serving of adventure without the early-days problems that dog […]

She is the fairies’ midwife, and she comes in shape no bigger than an agate stone on the forefinger of an alderman…or at least that’s what Simon LeBon told me.

My interest in Shakespeare came from watching a Duran Duran video when I was in the 8th grade. The song was Waiting for the Nightboat, and watching it led me to reading Romeo & Juliet for the first time. Who was this Queen Mab? And why was Simon LeBon so afraid of her? Junior High me needed to know. [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wZ09HcvYQTY&w=560&h=315] All of this came back to me while listening to my Audible boyfriend James Marsters read Summer Knight to me last week. In the fourth installment […]

Susan is a problem.

My initial review of this book cracks me up (see below). Yeah, sure, Ashley. Final verdict. Not your cup. Woosh woosh woosh (that was the sound of time passing) oh wait, you love this series now, you bobo. Since I finally fell in love with this series around book ten or so (it was just “like” from book four on), I’ve theorized that if I were ever to revisit the first three books I would feel differently about them, and that turned out to be […]
