Scooting on My Arse, Flying Between Fight Scenes. And I’m Failing to Articulate

Battle Ground by Jim Butcher

December 8, 2020 by LittlePlat 2 Comments

So, I have to admit, it has taken me a good long while to gather my thoughts on this one. So sorry if it comes across as a bit disorganised. What I am confident in through is my assertion when reviewing Peace Talks that we were only getting only the one story across two books. And after reading both, I’m still not sure that this was the best idea. The two books cannot be read as stand-alone. At all. The books share the structure […]

Wizards, Written in the Style of Kiss Kiss Bang Bang

Peace Talks by Jim Butcher

August 29, 2020 by LittlePlat 4 Comments

Six years! It’s been six years since we’ve had a full-length Dresden Files novel. The wait had not quite reached A Song of Ice and Fire extremes, but fans were still feeling a bit despondent. So cue the excitement earlier this year when it was announced that not only was the wizard-drought going to break, but it with not just one book, but two! …Well, sort of. Sorry, going to put a dampener in this. Because now that I have read Peace Talks – and […]

Sadly, Sue the T-Rex Does Not Make an Appearance. But a Very Good Boy Does

August 13, 2018 by LittlePlat 3 Comments

It’s been a while since Skin Game was published, and with no release date for Peace Talks in sight, Harry Dresen fans such as myself have been feeling a little despondent. We all miss our crazy, tall, smart-aleky wizard. Thankfully, Brief Cases has come along, and while most of the stories have been published previously, some have been hard to get, making this a very welcome release for the deprived reader. I think I’d read just over half the stories before, so  I was […]

Wild about Harry?

June 25, 2018 by kittenkong42 Leave a Comment

It feels like a very long time since the last novel was published in the Dresden Files (Skin Game) and with there still being no release date for the next one (Peace Talks) this anthology of short stories forms a much needed chance to at least read something new! I should note that some of these stories have been published in other anthologies so it’s worth checking that before buying but there is one completely new novella included. These stories are set at varying points […]

Harry’s long dark night of the soul.

May 30, 2018 by narfna 8 Comments

See, this is why we need half stars. This book right here. This is not a five star book for me, but I liked it better than four stars, also, and feel weird rating it the same as other books I’ve rated four stars and enjoyed less. It is a perfect encapsulation of the 4.5 star book. So round up or down? Up or down? It is a terrible decision. Don’t read on if you haven’t read through book twelve. Spoilers ahoy. A little bit […]

Burn it all to the ground, Jim Butcher. Burn it down.

May 8, 2018 by narfna 4 Comments

Short review for this re-read. I wrote a monster one last time. As always with this series, there are little small moments where I have to stop and mentally finger wag at Jim Butcher, mostly to do with Harry’s sometimes sexist-attitudes, but overall this book really is a masterful piece of urban fantasy. It works as a standalone story, but mostly it works as the pivot point in this ongoing twenty-three book series. You don’t really know how literal the title is going in, but […]
