The reviews I forgot to post, part 4!

Here Comes the Night by Rob Jones

December 30, 2020 by crystalclear Leave a Comment

This picture book features a young black boy and the dreams he has at night.  There are a variety of scenes to show how varied the mind of a child can be.  The words on each page are mostly in rhyme, but sometimes it feels like the language is a bit forced sometimes.  There are other word choices that would flow better and would probably be easier to understand.  And sometimes the words are just… off.    The most notable thing about the book is […]

How do you adapt a comic book into an audiobook? (Bingo #7)

Preludes and Nocturnes by Neil Gaiman

The Doll's House by Neil Gaiman

Dream Country by Neil Gaiman

4.5 stars #CBR12 Bingo: Happy (I never thought that Sandman could be adapted into an audio story, so this made me very happy indeed) Official book description: When The Sandman, also known as Lord Morpheus – the immortal king of dreams, stories and the imagination – is pulled from his realm and imprisoned on Earth by a nefarious cult, he languishes for decades before finally escaping. Once free, he must retrieve the three “tools” that will restore his power and help him to rebuild his dominion, which has […]

A dream is a wish your heart makes (Cannonball!)

Call Down the Hawk by Maggie Stiefvater

July 31, 2020 by Malin 6 Comments

#CBR12 Bingo: Orange (would also work for Fresh Start) This is the start of a new series, so it stands alone. You don’t have to have read Stiefvater’s Raven Cycle series, starting with The Raven Boys, but it gives a lot of useful background to Ronan and the other Lynch brothers.   Official book description: The dreamers walk among us . . . and so do the dreamed. Those who dream cannot stop dreaming – they can only try to control it. Those who are dreamed cannot have their […]

A Dream On

Why We Dream: The Transformative Power of Our Nightly Journey by Alice Robb

January 23, 2019 by Halbs Leave a Comment

I like dreams. Dreaming, attempting to interpret dreams, unconsciously developing weird short ideas, hearing about others’ dreams – all of it is fun. While I thinks dreams can teach us, and that our unconscious mind helps us sort through problems and memories, I also like the mystery of dreams. Why is Person X on my mind? What’s with all the snakes? Why am I always close to water? Is flying cool or terrifying? (It’s both.) In the past I’ve read some books on dream interpretation and […]

Plant a seed and watch it grow….read a book and watch your imagination soar

September 11, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Both books Forest Dreams by Imai and Kate, Who Tamed the Wind by Liz Garton Scanlon (illustrated by Lee White) take the theme of trees and conservation and make two different stories. Yet, while the path they take is different, the end of the journey results in the same goal.   Forest Dreams is an interesting story, but in some ways, it is abstract, too. Ayano Imai has created some very lovely illustrations to complement their text and its conservation theme. The dream the narrator […]

More Gorgeous Prose

October 17, 2017 by Ale Leave a Comment

I have decided to take the plunge and read the whole Raven Cycle series since I haven’t done a good submersion into a series in a while. Stiefvater’s beautiful prose does not disappoint in volume 2, The Dream Thieves. I am absolutely in love with this woman’s craft. Her brilliant syntax and poetic descriptions are at times so perfect and poignant, it hurts. It literally makes me think about her book whenever I’m not reading it. I blew through this volume in about 2 days because I […]
