I’m back! After finishing my committed 52 reviews, I ended up not reviewing for a while, because life etc. NB: Much of what follows is from the slightly more technical and in depth blog post concerning my attempts to explain the theory behind why part 2 of any trilogy is often the least fun or entertaining. As of now, the Dragon Lords series is a trilogy; I have no idea if the author will keep it that way or continue with further installments. I read […]
“Sisters, sisters There were never such devoted sisters”
Another book that has potential and then just fizzled out for me was The Yin-Yang Sisters and the Dragon Frightful. It was another book that I thought pages had stuck together, I had missed something or if the unfinished copy had pages go out of order. I could tell that Nancy Tupper Ling had put in a lot of effort into her text, but sadly, it was lost on me. I just could not get into it. It was Andrea Offermann’s illustrations that made the […]
This book is delightful, and now I want a tea dragon
I don’t remember where I first heard about The Tea Dragon Society but I was instantly hooked by the name, as it contains two of my favorite things, tea and dragons. While taking my ten year old gift book shopping (we always give books as birthday presents), I pointed out The Tea Dragon Society and said that I really wanted it. She remembered and gave it to me for my birthday this past weekend! Katie O’Neill wrote an endearing story with charming, beautiful illustrations and wonderful characters. The story […]
Here, There Be a Lot of Info Dump
One of my students suggested this book to me last year, and I finally got around to getting it from the library. If I was twelve years old again, I would have absolutely loved this book and been hooked for the duration of the series. It was fanciful, had a cute ending, and hit all the correct markers for decent kids’ fantasy, but the older I get, the harder a time I have sinking into YA fantasies, and this book was no exception. Our three […]
It’s the Messy Emotions That Lead to the Creation of Art and Beauty
I’m very late to the game on this one – it caught my eye years ago but I kept classifying it as a “I’ll get around to it later, maybe once there are sequels” novel and it ended up very far down on the backburner. I’m not really sure why it ended up as a “I’ll get around to it” novel since dragons are right in my wheel house but there are just too many books to choose from! The novel takes place in the […]
We are Stardust, We are Golden
Shadow Scale is the sequel to Seraphina, a book I reviewed a few months ago, which is easily one of the most original books I’ve read in a long time. Since it’s a sequel, Shadow Scale didn’t have quite the same feeling of magic and wonder, but I loved it all the same for giving me more time in this universe with these characters. These books take place in a kingdom called Goredd, in a world where humans and dragons co-exist, mostly peacefully (at least […]
