“You can’t go back,” Gilchrist said. “Haven’t you heard? We’re under quarantine, thanks to Mr. Dunworthy’s carelessness.”

Doomsday Book by Connie Willis

April 26, 2019 by vel veeter 1 Comment

This is one of the first books in a very long time that I considered staying up well past my bedtime to continue reading, almost any of the given nights I was reading this. Usually I am very happy to settle down at my normal time without reading on. I tried reading this years ago and the mass market edition of the book was just too much. So if you don’t know about the Oxford Time Travel series by Connie Willis — which includes this […]

“I don’t want to go on the cart! I feel fine. I think I’ll to go for a walk!”

June 19, 2016 by Malin 2 Comments

3.5 stars Kivrin Engle is a young history student at Oxford University, whose dream it is to time travel back in time to the Middle Ages. You see, in the 2050s, historians have the option to travel back in time as a research tool, to truly discover what the past was like. Most historians travel back to the early to mid 20th Century, and there are certain periods that are deemed far too dangerous. The Middle Ages has generally been deemed one of them, due […]

The Seinfeld of Sci-Fi – The Time Travel Book about Nothing

June 1, 2016 by cheerbrarian 4 Comments

I don’t have a lot of time for a robust review, so I’ll sum up some of my thoughts up, list style. I’m not a regular science fiction reader.  I like action, and character development.  If you like all the parts in “Lord of the Rings” where they are walking and not a lot is happening, this book is for you. I liked a lot of the elements of this book (time travel as commonplace, dual timelines, misdirection and mystery, historical context) but altogether I […]

Past-Future Tech

May 31, 2016 by melanir 5 Comments

I’m really conflicted with this book. On the one hand I can say that objectively this is an excellent novel. It’s well written, the characters are fully fleshed out, the plot is engaging, etc etc. However, while I was captivated by parts of the novel there were other parts that I didn’t like and struggled to get through and then there were parts that flat out triggered anxiety attacks and were miserable to get through. I’m glad I read it, but I don’t think I’ll read it […]

All Choices Have Consequences, But Also Benefits

May 26, 2016 by faintingviolet 4 Comments

This review will be the definition of spoiler free, come see us June 1 to talk details. I am, as they say, perplexed by this book. It was like a roller coaster ride. At the beginning, I felt like this: There was a great wide world of story ahead and it was all for me. Historians! In the near future! Using the scientific method and time travel! But then, I spent a lot of time waiting for thins to start happening. And that was not […]
