At some point this fall when visiting the bookstore, the cover of “Everfair” caught my eye. It went on my book wanted list based on the cover art and quote, “A book with gorgeous sweep, spanning years and continents, loves and hates, histories and fantasies… Everfair is sometimes sad, often luminous, and always original. A wonderful achievement. – Karen Joy Fowler”. The pairing of the mechanical and human hand with an intricate metal globed lamp between them suggested to me that this would be steampunk. […]
Magic Ex Libris
New Year and new hopes for Cannonball 9! Things are getting off to a good start as I finished “Revisionary” yesterday and am putting up my review today. I believe John Scalzi was the gateway to my discovering Jim C. Hines and I so glad to have found him as he not only an incredibly talented writer but a stand up human being as well (it’s always wonderful when those two intersect). In 2012 wanting to discuss the ways women are portrayed on cover art […]
Going Nova
In 2016 I read more than I reviewed so the challenge for 2017 is to write and publish reviews faster. To that end I’m going to attempt to post one or two more reviews to finish the year. At this point in the year I can no longer recall how I first heard about Margaret Fortune’s debut novel “Nova”. However it happened, when “Nova” was the recommended pick of the month at my favorite bookstore I was already aware of and interested in the title. […]
Spectacularly failing to complete a half cannonball
“The Blood Mirror” is review number 17, not nearly where I had hoped to be this time of year. Once I accepted I would not be reaching my half cannonball goal I decided to fail spectacularly and get a long book off my plate to make a fresh attempt in 2017. The Lightbringer series are hefty books. “The Blood Mirror” clocks in at 704 pages. While only reviewing 17 books I actually read 24 this past year. Clearly writing the reviews is where I’m falling […]
What the heck are baggywrinkles?
Given to me as a birthday present, I was intrigued by the title and cover of “Baggywrinkles: A Lubber’s Guide to Life at Sea”. At the time I joked that it was a good length for me to include in my Cannonball Read this year. This past Saturday I was running out the door to sit in a waiting room and needed a new book to read. I reached for a sci-fi novel called “Nova” that’s been waiting to be read for months now only […]
The book I needed post election
For my birthday in October my daughters gave me two books, “Ghost Talkers” and “Arabella of Mars”. As I had been waiting for over a year to read “Ghost Talkers”, that was given higher reading priority. Supposedly things happen for a reason and I’m now glad that “Arabella of Mars” came second because it was the book I was reading at the ending of this U.S. election. AoM was the perfect amount of escapism that was needed to balance the stress of this election cycle. AoM […]
