Everyone has felt like Moon Girl at one time or other – #CBR11Bingo: “And so it begins”

Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur: The Beginning by Brandon Montclare (writer), Amy Reeder (writer), Natacha Bustos (artist), Marco Failla (artist)

September 14, 2019 by Dome'Loki 1 Comment

For a couple years now, people have been telling me to read Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur.  I even bought it for my daughters, they read it and loved it, but it sat on the shelf unread by me.  Then an adorable video of a parent and child cosplaying, with a preschool aged Moon Girl and a parent in a blow up dinosaur costume, was posted on the Cannonball Read Book Chat Facebook page by emmalita.  It was adorable and gave me the push to […]

A Darker Shade of Magic Re-read: CBR Bingo “I Love This”

A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab

September 12, 2019 by Dome'Loki Leave a Comment

Due to a bathroom remodel, my husband and I slept in our front room, where all our bookcases are, and when we finally went back to our bedroom a stack of books was unearthed with A Darker Shade of Magic sitting on top.  This book was my introduction to author Victoria (V.E.) Schwab, also known for the Monsters of Verity duology and Vicious.  I devoured the story and highly praised it in a previous Cannonball.  My TBR list is intimidating, so even though I often find comfort in […]

A little bit romance, history, and ghost story

Bellewether by Susanna Kearsley

September 11, 2019 by Dome'Loki Leave a Comment

I have a friend who is an Outlander fanatic.  She re-reads the series every couple of years and the book associated with the tv series season before it is aired.  For the past couple of years at Christmas, I have given her Outlander calendars and one year an Outlander cook book (which she used and it has good recipes!).  Last year I wanted to introduce her to a new author.  My favorite local independent bookstore gave me a couple of recommendations but I settled on […]

Django Wexler’s “The Shadow Campaigns” series took me on one heck of a ride

The Guns of Empire: Book 4 of The Shadow Campaigns by Django Wexler

The Infernal Battalion: Book 5 of The Shadow Campaigns by Django Wexler

August 31, 2019 by Dome'Loki Leave a Comment

This review specifically covers the last two books in Djanjo Wexler’s “The Shadow Campaigns” series, book four, The Guns of Empire, and the conclusion in book five, The Infernal Battalion but also discusses the series as a whole.  Each book of The Shadow Campaigns gets a 4 star rating, however the strength of the series as a whole is 5 stars. With each book Wexler expands the scope of the story and fills in the world with greater detail.  The Thousand Names is a military […]

Cute cooking manga that took a dark turn, comes to a sweet conclusion

Kitchen Princess Vol. 7 by Miyuki Kobayashi (story by), Natsumi Ando (manga by)

Kitchen Princess Vol. 8 by Miyuki Kobayashi (story by), Natsumi Ando (manga by)

Kitchen Princess Vol. 9 by Miyuki Kobayashi (story by), Natsumi Ando (manga by)

Kitchen Princess Vol. 10 by Miyuki Kobayashi (story by), Natsumi Ando (manga by)

August 3, 2019 by Dome'Loki Leave a Comment

I have previously reviewed Volume 1 and a combined review of Volumes 5 and 6 in the series.  Kitchen Princess starts with the main protagonist, Najika, changing schools to find her flan prince.  A boy that saved her life by offering flan and hope when Najika was at her darkest after becoming orphaned at a young age.  She was raised by Hagio-Sensei in Lavender House, a group home for orphaned children in Hokkaido, Japan. Najika has a natural talent in the kitchen.  With one taste […]

Squirrel Girl continues to delight with choose your own adventure, dating drama, and computer science! (bonus review from Ysakitty)

The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl Vol. 4: I Kissed a Squirrel and I Liked It by Ryan North (writer), Erica Henderson (artist), Jacob Chabot (artist)

July 3, 2019 by Dome'Loki Leave a Comment

Squirrel Girl a.k.a. Doreen Green is at the top of my favorite superhero list and I love sharing her with people unfamiliar with this awesome heroine.  My daughters look up to her and you couldn’t ask for a better role model.  In this fourth graphic novel collection there are two particular issues that stand out for their uniqueness in my (albeit limited) comic reading.  The book starts with a choose your own adventure and ends with an issue devoted entirely to using computer science.  In […]
