I came into the Grishaverse backwards

Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo

October 29, 2019 by Dome'Loki 2 Comments

I came across the Grishaverse backwards.  Last year I read a write up for Leigh Bardugo’s The Language of Thorns and was intrigued by the concept of a book of fairytales that characters in her Grishaverse would have read or been told, when they were children.  The piece said knowledge of the other books was not necessary to enjoy Language of Thorns and I put it on my Cannonball gift exchange wish list.  I was delighted to discover it in my gift box (Thank you, […]

Feelings, free will, and a robot adventure: CBR Bingo – Two heads are better than one, Bingo!

Cog by Greg Van Eekhout

October 28, 2019 by Dome'Loki 2 Comments

Completing the “Two heads are better than one” square fulfills my bingo column, “Cannonballer Says” to “Remix”, and gives me my first bingo!  I used my “Reader’s Choice” to replace “Remix” with “Classic”. Dome’Loki Greg van Eekhout is a local San Diego author who frequently does events at my favorite independent bookstore, Mysterious Galaxy.  He writes for both adult and middle grade audiences.  Greg’s two most recent books are middle grade and as a result, it has been great fun to take my kids with […]

I now understand why this book is so beloved : CBRbingo – Classic

The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupery

October 27, 2019 by Dome'Loki Leave a Comment

The Little Prince is one of those books that I have been aware of for a long time but had somehow not gotten around to yet.  It’s status as an all time great is why I chose it for the ‘Classic’ square in Cannonball bingo.  I’m using ‘Classic’ for my Reader’s Choice square to replace ‘Remix’. I became aware of the power in The Little Prince, and how it affects readers, through tattoo art relating to the book.  In most every tattoo gallery featuring art inspired […]

It was magic, until it suddenly wasn’t: CBR Bingo – Pajiba

Daisy Jones and The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid

October 10, 2019 by Dome'Loki Leave a Comment

Ever since Daisy Jones and The Six was released, it has been on my radar, in particular because it was highly praised on my two favorite pop culture websites Pajiba and Lainey Gossip .  When CBR Bingo was announced, I instantly knew what my Pajiba square book would be.  My first title for this review was, “What I imagined the 70s rock n’ roll scene was like”, but while Daisy Jones and The Six is a great time capsule into that era, that is not what the […]

Has the bones of “Beauty and the Beast” but more sexy and with faeries. CBR Bingo – Cannonballer Says

A Court of Thorn and Roses by Sarah J. Maas

October 5, 2019 by Dome'Loki Leave a Comment

In August, alwaysanswerb posted a review of A Court of Thorns and Roses.  The review also covers the other two books in the trilogy of the same name.  It starts with over all impressions before moving into spoiler territory.  I stopped at the spoilers because I had been convinced to read this book and didn’t want to know!  Having finished A Court of Thorns and Roses, I’m wishing I had put the whole series on hold at the library instead of just the first one. […]

Child me would have LOVED this book, adult me thinks it’s pretty great: CBR Bingo – Birthday

Matilda by Roald Dahl

October 1, 2019 by Dome'Loki Leave a Comment

When looking for which authors have a birthday to fit the bingo requirements, I discovered that Roald Dahl’s birthday is September 13th.  I’ve previously read a few other books by Dahl but had never read Matilda, so this seemed like a good time. When first published in 1988, I would have been eight years old and it would have been perfect for me to discover in about another two years.  However, it escaped notice and when the movie came out in 1996, I was entering my […]
