I think the author could have written two separate books because the multiple storylines only tenuously connect

High Water by Patty Flores Reinhart

Bingo Number 4!!!!  One more than last year and a whole month left to go!  CBR 13 Bingo: Travel – Frankie leaves her Southern California home to find herself in Venice, Italy This book was a gift from a friend, as it was written by her friend and she wanted to be supportive, and I like books.  While there are elements that I genuinely like, biggest being the main character, there are other parts that drove me crazy.  A small detail was not knowing the […]

Still just OK the second time around

The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden

September 11, 2021 by Dome'Loki 4 Comments

CBR 13 Bingo Square: Landscape Genuine question:  It seemed when Cannonball Book Club was announced The Bear and the Nightingale was presented as a reimagining of Rumpelstiltskin, as that was the fairytale linked to for reading the original.  I don’t see a comparison?  Is there something I’m missing?  Or was I incorrect in that the two were paired together in that way?  Would love to know how others interpret as this feels more like “Cinderella” crossed with “The Twelve Months”. For Cannonball Book Club, I had […]

A phone with the audio book Practical Demonkeeping open on the screen, with a bingo board behind the phone.

Funny but a little bit dated in LGBTQ+ depiction

Practical Demonkeeping: Pine Cove Series, 1 by Christopher Moore

CBR 13 Bingo: Self Care and Bingo #3!- I listened to this book while taking my daily health stomps to take care of myself. Rarely do my book reviews elicit any reactions or comments on my Facebook page but my review of Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ’s Childhood Pal had multiple friends commenting how much they love Christopher Moore and the next book I need to read is Practical Demonkeeping. So once I completed listening to the Dresden Files short stories, I used the […]

The cover of the book "The Everlasting Rose" by Dhonielle Clayton with branches of a rose bush above and to the side of the book.

“We can’t expect one person – or even two – to take on the entire burden of resisting on their shoulders. We all have to stand up and say NO.”

The Everlasting Rose by Dhonielle Clayton

CBR 13 Bingo: Flora The Everlasting Rose is the sequel to Dhonielle Clayton’s  The Belles.  To quote myself regarding The Belles, “This was fantasy the likes of which I haven’t read before, full of decadence and frippery, a magic system based on beauty, and I was entranced.”  The Everlasting Rose is a different beast of a book compared to its predecessor as it is a fugitive and resistance story. The soon to be new Queen of Orleans, Sophia, is setting the pieces in place for a […]

The book A Desolation Called Peace stands in front of a clipboard with a bingo sheet on it. The both are on dry ground with dead leaves and grasses.

‘The spook and her pet’ take on an alien empire in this amazing sequel – and Bingo #2!

A Desolation Called Peace by Arkady Martine

CBR 13 Bingo: New Series – This is the sequel to A Memory Called Empire which was published in 2019 and completes my second bingo. I loved A Memory Called Empire , in my review said it was deserving its spot on the Hugo nominee list and I was delighted when it won!  The follow up, A Desolation Called Peace, is similarly incredible.  In preparation for reading this, I found an excellent recap that goes over individuals and factions, and their motivations.  I highly recommend it. The […]

Thank you, Bothari43, for helping me complete my first bingo of 2021!

Magic Bites by Ilona Andrews

August 31, 2021 by Dome'Loki 4 Comments

CBR 13 Bingo Square: FREE – It’s taken a while for me to get around to it but I have finally read Magic Bites, a  Cannonball Book Exchange from Bothari43!  Visit link for bonus Wall-E content. When I posted my thank you, Emmalita and Malin were quick to jump in and warn me that this is not Ilona Andrews best book but if I could stick around, book three is excellent.  This was reinforced by other Cannonballers during one of the zoom chats earlier this year.  I […]
