Just pug out

Noodle and the No Bones Day by Jonathan Graziano

May 25, 2022 by BlackRaven 2 Comments

I admit, I have never been a “dog person.” I have liked a dog or three in my day but prefer books about them. And while I found a few cute ones, this review is about a pug named Noodle. (Check back for more later). Noodle and the No Bones Day is not what you think. No, poor Noodle is not looking for a snack/some bones (though he usually is looking for a snack), they just have no bones today. They usually are sweet, silly, […]

A puggle and a couple poodles discuss important concepts

What Are You? by Christian Trimmer

May 3, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

You get right to the point of the matter with What Are You? Well, okay it takes a couple minutes (after all doggies must play and you can ask questions afterwards). But soon the poodles that a young puggle is playing with ask The Question, “What are you?” Our hero replies, “Dog.” But no, that is not good enough for them. As this young pup looks nothing like what dogs look like. Or do they? Dealing with the “Where are you Really From?” or “Are […]

He’s a dog called Murray with lots of worries

Don’t Worry Murry by David Ezra Stein

May 3, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

We know the story that is presented in Don’t Worry, Murray as it is a story of anxieties and fears. However, we have not seen it with one of the cutest pups I have seen in a bit. David Ezra Stein created a small dog that has big fears. He does not want to go outside. Why? Asks the narrator. And in a wordless explanation we get an all too clear reason why (it is wet, and he does not want to get dirty). And this […]

A fire hydrants tail

Lou by Breanna Carzoo

May 2, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I almost was not going to write up Lou by Breanna Carzoo. Then I said, I would write it up with Two Dogs by Ian Falconer. I did not, because I figured even though they have both have dogs doing what dogs do to plants and in the case of Lou, fire hydrants, it was a stretch to connect them. And yes, my dear reader, you read it right. Fire hydrant. Or as Lou calls themselves, a toilet. We even have Carzoo showing us the […]

Not my favorite chew toy, but it will be someone’s

Two Dogs by Ian Falconer

May 2, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The publisher description says Two Dogs by Ian Falconer is for fans of Bark, George and A Ball for Daisy! And while I am not sure exactly if that is true, it is for someone who loves dogs and dachshunds in particular. Since our two main (only real on screen characters) are two dachshunds named Perry (the adventurous one who barks before he looks) and Augie (the more likely to sniff than be unsure). Stuck inside (as the humans have had to go off to […]

“I wanted the children I taught to know that they, too, could be worthy of featuring in a novel.”

Mine for Keeps by Jean Little

February 10, 2022 by GentleRain Leave a Comment

This book is a delight. Jean Little was a Canadian author who wrote over 50 children’s books, and her books often center on disabled characters. Little herself was legally blind from birth, and I think that the delicacy and realism of her novels really come through as a result of her own experiences. Mine for Keeps was her first children’s novel, which I just found out when doing research for this review, but it doesn’t seem like it’s uncertain or unpolished at all. It’s very confident […]
