Hey Diddle Diddle the Dog and the Fiddle & the Bear played the Piano

The Bear, the Piano, the Dog, and the Fiddle by David Litchfield

March 6, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The Bear, the Piano, the Dog, and the Fiddle is not as strong as the first book, The Bear and the Piano. Which is not saying a lot, as I was not jumping for joy over the first one. However, David Litchfield introduces the theme of jealousy in a manner that is accessible for children. Fiddle-playing Hector and his dog, Hugo, are best friends. But since there is a new sensation happening (a bear that plays the piano) people no longer what to listen to […]

Bark once for yes, wag twice for no

The Dog Diaries: Ginger by Kate Klimo

March 5, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The Dog Diaries follow the lives of different breeds throughout their lives. With the first book (though I am assuming you do not have to read in any order), Ginger, we see a Golden Retriever narrating her life from her puppy mill birth to her various homes. The modern language shows how some people act/feel/treat pets. The use of “Rainbow Bridge” for the death of dogs was a bit heavy-handed for this reader, but most people should be fine. The other part was the reference […]

Too Much to Say About the Cat

To Say Nothing of the Dog by Connie Willis

February 12, 2019 by jeverett15 Leave a Comment

To Say Nothing of the Dog is not for those with short-attention spans. Though it eventually finds its way and becomes an absorbing, rollicking time travel story, the road there is bumpy and, even worse, frustratingly slow and irritating. For about 150 pages, almost a third of the book, Willis putters around with her narrative, allowing characters to waste time on sitcom-level miscommunications and incompetent decision-making. The book makes an impressive recovery, which explains and also justifies the high esteem it is held in among […]

That sounds far-fetched

December 27, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Rachel Isadora has created a reading and visual gem for the younger crowd with My Dog Laughs. The children and their dogs show how varied dogs are, as well as their owners. Each page shows how dogs make mistakes, give kisses, make friends, fart, eat and laugh. Each page shows there are tall, short, fluffy and all kinds of dogs. Yet, sometimes dogs look the same, too.  Isadora shows how people take care of and love their canine buddies. Without being pushy, Isadora also shows […]

All Dogs Go to Heaven

November 7, 2018 by kfishgirl 2 Comments

cbr10bingo… Two heads are better than one Even though it’s called two heads are better than one, I went with three heads.  I enlisted the help of my two nieces.  Olivia is eight and Nora is six.  They’re awesome, and they love dogs, and they love reading. This review is both happy and sad.  We read this book because I lost my little guy Ernie this spring.  It was the hardest thing I’ve had to go through in a long long time. He was a […]

While I’ll miss them coming to my store, I did not miss their gem of a book!

September 11, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Good Rosie is the latest picture book by author Kate DiCamillo and illustrator Harry Bliss. It is an interesting take on a new situation scenario where the child (or in this case, dog) is lonely and would like to make friends but is nervous about making these new friends. This new situation could because the child/dog is going to a new school, it is their first day of school or they are going to the child/dog park.   While you can see the illustrations are […]
