A Decent Enough Introduction

May 6, 2018 by Jen K Leave a Comment

As much as people talk about Terry Pratchett, I have never actually read any of his novels. Part of it is just that there is such a large back catalog so I wasn’t sure where to begin. I also think an ex of mine liked him a lot which may have made me a bit hesitant for a while.  As much love as Pratchett inspires, though, I decided it was finally time to read him, and I asked for advice in the Facebook group. I […]

When does this get un-sad?

February 21, 2018 by Bothari43 3 Comments

I miss the days when a Pratchett book was just a Pratchett book – brilliant and wonderful and funny and sharp and thought-provoking. Now, rereading A Hat Full of Sky, it’s all those things, but now there’s this overlay of SAD. Sad that we don’t get to see Tiffany Aching grow up. Sad about what happens to Granny Weatherwax. Heartbroken and furious at the universe for what happened to Sir Terry. SIGH. But if you let the Nac Mac Feegle chase away the sad for […]

Mmmmm, syrup

January 26, 2018 by alphabootoo 1 Comment

“When light encounters a strong magical field it loses all sense of urgency.  It slows right down.  And on the Discworld the magic was embarrassingly strong, which meant that the soft yellow light of dawn flowed over the sleeping landscape like the caress of a gentle lover or, as some would have it, like golden syrup.” Pratchett describes the sunlight of Discworld as flowing like golden syrup several times during The Light Fantastic, which meant I spent a fair amount of the time that I […]

Some cool bits in here, and Very Silly, but not great.

January 22, 2018 by narfna 6 Comments

I like the Wizards books, I do. The scenes involving them are always a good time in making fun of bureaucracy and tradition and old white men. They are also usually very silly. But I have yet to love one of the Wizard books. It’s just so hard for them to have an emotional through line like so many of Pratchett’s other books do. Like, this book wasn’t really about anything. Sure, on the surface it’s the Wizards flouncing off accidentally to Not Australia (aka […]

And so it begins…

January 9, 2018 by alphabootoo 5 Comments

I attempted the second Cannonball and failed miserably (seriously – the ancient blog I managed to cobble together for the effort shows that but a single book review ever got posted). I’m finally back to try again, although I’ve lowered the bar to just a Quarter Cannonball in the hopes it will be more manageable. I am the sort of person who buys books in the hopes that perhaps I will someday find a way to read them and this challenge may be the impetus […]

This book is fun as hell and should be read by one and all

November 9, 2017 by tillie Leave a Comment

“You haven’t really been anywhere until you’ve got back home.” Step right up, step right up. It’s the sequel to the color of magic. It’s the light fantastic! It’s got your terrible puns: “Rincewind, all the shops have been smashed open, there was a whole bunch of people across the street helping themselves to musical instruments, can you believe that?” “Yeah,” said Rincewind. “Luters, I expect.” It’s got your on the nose social commentary Not for the first time she reflected that there were many […]
