“Why do you want my voice?” “Because I’m a sassy sea witch and I’m gonna keep it in a nautilus necklace, then use it to steal your man from right under your nose”

Can't Escape Love by Alyssa Cole

3.5 stars CBR17 Pie Challenge: Inclusion CBR17 Bingo: Borrow (read through Libby, since I don’t actually own the book) Regina “Reggie” Hobbs is working hard to make her nerdy website, Girls with Glasses, a success, and prove to her over-protective parents that she’s perfectly capable of taking care of herself, even if she’s in a wheelchair. She loves the work, she loves her very capable team, but lately, she’s been struggling with insomnia, and the only thing that seems to soothe her to sleep is […]

Disability Visibility: First-Person Stories from the Twenty-First Century by Alice Wong

July 3, 2025 by vega-table Leave a Comment

Why did I read Disability Visibility: First-Person Stories from the 21st Century from Alice Wong and dozens others? I urgently needed to borrow a book from a friend for specific and convoluted reasons. And the Storygraph’s Genre Challenge includes “an essay collection by a disabled author.” Finally, as a person who digs fashion and human rights, I was (and am) a fan of well dressed activist Alice Wong. Essentially, I had no reason not to read it.   The book is split into four groups […]

Seeing through touch, taste, smell, and sound

I Hear the Snow, I Smell the Sea by Janice Milusich and Chris Raschka

June 13, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I Hear the Snow, I Smell the Sea is a lovely, poetic text and soft classical story that also has several modern takes. Author Janice Milusich’s text and Chris Raschka styled illustrations make up this familiar season’s story (we have a child who follows the seasons in the usual ways by talking about the sun, how things feel, colors and more) but this time there is a wonderful twist of having a visually impaired narrator. This narrator must experience these things differently, therefore seems to […]

CBR16 Bingo: Celestial – Teddy paints Stella as Electra, one of the Pleiades of Greek mythology – the daughters of the Titan Atlas who were transformed into stars by Zeus. CBR16 Sweet Books: Binge Nowhere Book Bingo: A YA novel Smart Bitches Summer Bingo: Epistolary romance CBR16 Bingo: Part 1 and Part 2 (the book has more than 600 pages) This is the second book in a series, and starting with this one means a lot of stuff won’t make much sense. I also don’t think it’s possible for me to review this book without spoiling the previous one, so if you’re not up to date, start with Illuminae. After the disastrous events, first on […]
