Fake it Till You Bake It

Fake It Till You Bake It by Jamie Wesley

May 24, 2022 by Classic 4 Comments

Please note that I received this book via NetGalley. This did not affect my rating or review. Did Not Finish-30 percent. I cannot read any more fake relationship romances. I am tired of them. It feels like lately all I am reading is fake relationship which turns to lovers. I thought the premise of the book was good (football star running a cupcake bakery meets a social media “star”) but I really didn’t like Jada and thought her and Donovan didn’t work. I initially was […]

Screams From the Dark: 29 Tales of Monsters and the Monstrous

Screams From the Dark: 29 Tales of Monsters and the Monstrous by Ellen Datlow

May 9, 2022 by Classic Leave a Comment

Please note that I received this book via NetGalley. This did not affect my rating or review. Did Not Finish-27 percent. I feel really bad. I thought this would be up my alley. Getting to read 29 stories about monsters and monstrous things during one of the rainiest weeks ever should have been a good deal. Instead I found myself losing interest the longer I read. The first short story I read was great, the next confusing, and then it went downhill from there. After […]

Could Not Get Into This One: DNF at 25 Percent

The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K. Le Guin

August 8, 2019 by Classic 4 Comments

I tried. Really. I hate it when I don’t get into a classic. I have been told for years that I should read Ursula K. Le Guin and how much I would like her and maybe I should just try something else. This book didn’t make any sense to me. I kept reading words and going what in the world does this mean? And some of the sentences/paragraphs felt overly written. I just finally decided that I wasn’t enjoying it and moved on to another […]

Masquerades as a True Christie Book, It is Not

March 6, 2017 by Classic Leave a Comment

This book sucked which is why I kicked it to the proverbial curb when I got to 40 pages in. I often say that a good DNF review can steer potential readers away from a book that the reviewer articulates why it would be a waste of time. Honestly, all you have to know is that Agatha Christie did not write this novel. Instead, Christie wrote a play called “Black Coffee.” However it was not turned into a novel. Decades later, Charles Osborne would take […]

Officially Did Not Finish, 2016

December 30, 2016 by NTE 3 Comments

A few years ago, I came to the realization that I did not have to finish a book, if I wasn’t enjoying it.  This was – to say the least – a startling revelation for me, because I had previously trudged through every. single. word. of every. single. book., even if I despised it.  It led to some pretty miserable reading days.  But since I’ve stopped doing that, I not only read more, I enjoy what I’m reading more, because I know that I’m reading […]

This is not a romance. This hero is not romantic.

November 28, 2016 by Emmalita 5 Comments

Can we all agree that the bad boy redeemed can be a problematic trope? Confusing a romantic bad boy with an abuser probably goes back farther than Emily Bronte’s Heathcliff, but he’s a good example. Kristen Callihan’s Gabriel Scott is the knock off Heathcliff here. I am the Anne Bronte. I am not sure why I bought this the minute I had coins in my pocket. I didn’t love the first book in the series, and I really didn’t like Gabriel Scott, aka Scottie, our purported […]
