In which I begin to question my choices

Dragonfly in Amber by Diana Gabaldon

January 23, 2021 by Ellesfena 9 Comments

Series: Outlander. I read book 1 in 2015. What I remember about this series prior to reading this book: Not much. A married nurse in Scotland accidentally goes back in time and falls in love with a big, hairy Scotsman from several centuries ago. There’s a lot of disturbing sexual violence and the first book was ridiculously long. Why I stopped reading the series: See above re: sexual violence and book length. The plot: Claire (the nurse from Book 1) is back in her own […]

He was just tight enough and just familiar enough with the house to be able to go out in the kitchen alone, apparently to get ice, but actually to sober up a little; he was not quite enough of a friend of the family to pass out on the living-room couch.

The Lottery and Other Stories by Shirley Jackson

The Witchcraft of Salem Village by Shirley Jackson

Virgins by Diana Gabaldon

The Lottery – 5/5 Stars This remains one of my favorite books ever, and is one of the very best story collections (published as a collection) that I’ve ever read to.  These stories hang on to each other so well, and there’s a few stories with lightness and levity (like “Charles” obviously, but also “The Witch”) and the obvious and patently sinister ones like “The Lottery” as well as the ones where the sinister edge cuts through only at the margins almost illegibly so. I […]

Seven Stones to Stand or Fall by Diana Gabaldon

January 19, 2020 by Leedock Leave a Comment

Many of the book series that I enjoy have novellas or short stories available electronically. I’m not a Kindle person so I generally end up missing out on these smaller literary nuggets that explore secondary characters or flesh out backstories. I bought this when it was published over two years ago, but allowed it to languish on my TBR pile until now. Outlander books take preparation. They are heavy tomes and I need to be ready to brew a cup of tea and snuggle up for a […]

Finally caught up! #CBRBingo

November 27, 2018 by narfna 2 Comments

I liked this one as much as I liked Dragonfly in Amber and Drums of Autumn. A definite improvement over the last several books, although I did enjoy #7 as well, if not quite as much. I’m officially caught up on this series now, and that feels weird! These books are so long, and they’re still not done! Not even going to try and sum up what happened in this book. It was a lot. There was a lot of drama, but unlike in past […]

At least there’s no GD ghost bear.

I sit down to read A Breath of Snow and Ashes over a year after finishing the last Outlander book, A Fiery Cross, which for the uninitiated is literally just a tolerance test for how long a reader can stand the unabridged minutiae of unremarkable 18th century backwoods living, plus a sprinkling of UTTERLY BONKERS NONSENSE to trick them into believing much more is happening than is actually happening. That last sentence should hopefully provide some understanding as to why it took me so long […]
