Bogart made it better

The Maltese Falcon by Dashiell Hammett

August 1, 2019 by Wanderlustful Leave a Comment

The Maltese Falcon is a mystery novel classic- a 1929 knot on the detective fiction string that extends from Wilkie Collins through to Jo Nesbo and Ian Rankin.  It features all the things we’ve come to expect from the ‘hard-boiled’ sub-genre: a hard-drinking loner detective, a handful of quirky criminal thugs, some pushy cops, a beautiful but possibly duplicitous femme fatale.  Sam Spade is that detective, and he is trying to solve a mystery that builds around him with minimal clues but increasingly plentiful bodies. […]

Sleepy short stories

In the Teeth of the Evidence by Dorothy L. Sayers

July 24, 2019 by Wanderlustful Leave a Comment

In the Teeth of the Evidence is a collection of Dorothy L. Sayers’ short mystery/ detective stories, a number of which feature her best known detectives, Lord Peter Wimsey and Montague Egg, and the rest of which are stand alone tales.  I took a Detective Fiction class way back in college, so I had some name recognition for Sayers, but I couldn’t have told you much about her work.  This novel brought some of that information back to me- Wimsey and Egg are detectives from […]

Poetic Detective Fiction

Started Early, Took My Dog by Kate Atkinson

March 18, 2019 by Wanderlustful 1 Comment

I hadn’t read any of Kate Atkinson’s novels before picking this one up, and I initially had confused her with Kate Morton (smaller English settings, British authors named Kate?).  I was incorrect but- once I figured out my error- pleasantly surprised by this novel. Started Early, Took My Dog is the 4th and currently latest installment in Atkinson’s Jackson Brodie private detective series, but it stands alone without any loss of comprehension in reading the novels out of order.  In addition to her private detective […]

When the weather outside is frightful, Louise Penny is delightful

Dead Cold / A Fatal Grace by Louise Penny

February 26, 2019 by Wanderlustful 1 Comment

I read this book on a weekend when it was far too cold to go outside (-25 Celsius) and it was a glorious experience to lounge in my snug and warm house while reading an icy murder mystery.  This was my first Louise Penny, which seems crazy given that she seems like she’d be the Venn diagram centre of my love for a good detective novel and my patriotic love for Canadian Lit.  The upside is that I’ve now entered Louise Penny’s world, and I’m […]

Too Bland to be Sinful

14th Deadly Sin by James Patterson

January 31, 2019 by Wanderlustful Leave a Comment

This was my first foray into James Patterson’s works, and it might be my last.  I gather that I may be alone in my lackluster reviews, though, as Mr. Patterson has made quite an industry out of detective novels- enough of an audience that this novel is the 14th installment in the “Womens Murder Club” (or WMC) series.  As background, the WMC is made up of 4 professional women- a cop, a medical examiner, a lawyer and a journalist- who became friends through their involvement […]

The Forgotten is Not One to Remember

The Forgotten by Faye Kellerman

January 4, 2019 by Wanderlustful 1 Comment

This was the first Faye Kellerman novel that I’ve read, and my reasons for starting off the 2019 CBR challenge with it were two-fold: 1) I love a good mystery/ detective fiction novel; and 2) this was on my bookshelf one of my 2019 goals is to read through the books I already own.  Unfortunately, this novel never quite gelled for me.  It wasn’t horrible- I was invested enough to finish and find out ‘who done it’- but I also won’t be seeking out any […]
