The Kopp Sisters

Miss Kopp’s Midnight Confessions by Amy Stewart

June 29, 2023 by Owlizabeth Leave a Comment

It’s been so long since I listened to the first two books in this series, I was worried that coming back would be confusing or disappointing. Luckily, Amy Stewart has built such strong characters that it only took a few minutes to get reoriented to the world of the Kopp sisters. And while I’d definitely recommend reading the series from the beginning, this could be read on its own. The Kopp sisters were actual people. Constance is the first lady sheriff’s deputy of Bergen County, […]

Murder at the Magic School

Magic for Liars by Sarah Gailey

June 15, 2019 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

I’ve not had a lot of luck with things highly recommended and hyped by authors whose works I’ve enjoyed.  V.E. Schwab might be an exception. I found out about the impending publication of Magic For Liars from her social media, and picked it up as soon as it came out. The descriptions of the premise as something between Harry Potter and The Magicians is also reasonably accurate; another point for the book, since I frequently don’t quite agree with the blurbs either. The basic idea […]

May 17, 2018 by Melina Leave a Comment

After his sister and brother in law were brutally slain in their home, Frank Rath gave up his badge to raise his months’ old niece as his daughter.  But with his skills and instincts he never truly strayed that far from the job, taking up the profession of private detective, often having his daughter Rachel help him see the pieces of the puzzle he was missing.  When his friend from the force comes to him asking him to investigate what has happened to his gorgeous […]

Sanderson does detective fiction with a sf twist.

June 21, 2017 by narfna Leave a Comment

I swear, one of these days Brandon Sanderson will write something that I dislike—something that is boring or trite or that just plain doesn’t work—but that day is not this day. This day that son of a gun has written yet another clever, entertaining story for me to four or five star. And this time he takes on detective stories! With a fantasy twist, of course. In the near future, some sort of supernatural event has reshaped the world, and made it possible to recreate […]

A study in scarlet evening gowns

September 7, 2015 by kdm 1 Comment

I added this book to my list following some CBR recommendations, and picked it up last night when I wanted something new and light.  Yup, bought it last night, writing a review this morning.  So obviously, this was a quick read, but lots of fun nonetheless.  This book was in the YA section, but it was blessedly free of a dystopian future, an epic love story, and whiny teenagers for a change. Obvious things first, Jackaby is basically Sherlock.  It’s mentioned in every review or […]
