Outland- Escapist Apocalypse

Outland by Dennis E. Taylor

March 26, 2023 by NatteringwPride Leave a Comment

When the Yellowstone supervolcano erupts, it’s up to six college students and their experimental physics project to prevent the end of civilization. When an experiment to study quantum uncertainty goes spectacularly wrong, physics student Bill Rustad and his friends find that they have accidentally created an inter-dimensional portal. They connect to Outland—an alternate Earth with identical geology, but where humans never evolved. The group races to establish control of the portal before the government, the military, or evildoers can take it away. Then everything changes […]

Earthside

Earthside by Dennis E Taylor

March 3, 2023 by jmsudar Leave a Comment

Every general bit of praise and criticism I have for Earthside can be cribbed/shared directly with my criticism/praise for Outland, so I’ll avoid rehashing all this here and get to what’s both different and worse, much much worse, about Earthside: Dennis E Taylor turning his Pollyanna rose-tinted glasses to a post-apocalyptic justice and political system. There are witch trials, and it’s terrifying. The stakes of these witch trials are life and brutal, unyielding death. If you’re lucky you’ll be exiled to an almost uninhabitable Earth, […]

Outland

Outland by Dennis E Taylor

March 3, 2023 by jmsudar Leave a Comment

Dennis E Taylor is the author of the Bobiverse, one of my guilty pleasure reads. I say pleasure because the books relax me and I gobble them like popcorn, always curious what new adventure is going to come bubbling down the pipe. I say guilty because… they’re not very good. They’re simplistic, naive, and they commit a cardinal sin of treating the main character, Bob, as being able to do anything with enough time and resources (Batman-style) because he’s a tech genius. As someone who […]

Earthside- The comforting Apocalypse continues!

Earthside by Dennis E. Taylor

February 16, 2023 by NatteringwPride Leave a Comment

The fate of mankind is in the hands of a group of 20-something science nerds in the sequel to Outland, by the Audible #1 best-selling author of the “Bobiverse” series. The Yellowstone super-eruption has put an end to modern civilization. As cities and countries continue to fall, the colony of Rivendell in the alternate Earth known as Outland looks more and more like the only real hope for humanity. But life in Rivendell isn’t getting any simpler, either. Bill and Kevin continue to discover new worlds; […]

A nice little palate cleanser

A Change of Plans by Dennis E. Taylor

March 3, 2021 by ingres77 Leave a Comment

Audible’s members section has blown up recently – or I’ve just recently discovered what others have long enjoyed. There’s a virtually endless supply of books, novellas, and short stories available for download – beyond the normal one credit per month system. Currently, I have 65 books on my phone – almost all of them downloaded in the last two weeks. I should stop looking – I may have a problem. I’ve read quite a few books by Dennis Taylor, and virtually all of them have […]

A couple sci-fi stories that I enjoyed, but which probably won’t really stick with me.

Feedback by Dennis E. Taylor

The Salvage Crew by Yudhanjaya Wijeratne

Feedback (4 stars) This is a pretty simple short story by Dennis E. Taylor, released on Audible. It tells the story of a group of scientists who create a time machine. They then fine themselves living out “the grandfather paradox” (without any actual dead grandfathers), and then try to find a way to get the timeline  back to where it’s supposed to be. Short, simple (but complex), and interesting. And it’s narrated by Ray Porter – who is one of my favorite narrators. There isn’t […]
