Oh, Dean Koontz. I might be just about at the end of my rope with you… “Every failure hollows out my heart a little further, and no success is able to refill any of that emptiness.” Okay, so this is the fifth Odd Thomas book. Up to now, besides the first one which was pretty good, they’ve been a little disappointing — particularly in terms of plot. Still, Odd’s own little way of viewing the world keeps the books moving and keeps me (vaguely) interested. But with Odd […]
Definite Improvement
Okay, so this is the fourth Odd Thomas book, and while it still wasn’t as good as the first, I think it was a definite improvement over the rather lame second and third books. Lots of weird characters in this one, like any Dean Koontz novel, but it seemed to have better flow and Odd felt a bit more on his game than before (I guess that monastery stay did him some good!) “It is also essential that good men and women not be educated and […]
These books better start improving, and stat
The third installment of Dean Koontz’s Odd Thomas series, Brother Odd, is the dullest book referencing nuns driving monster trucks that I’ve ever read. “Moving the kids was not a good idea, but I sure wanted to see nuns in monster trucks plowing their way through a blizzard.” Yeah, me too, Odd. Instead, I got 500 pages of musings on good and evil, while a crazy Russian dude cracked jokes about being a librarian in the background. Okay, so in this book, Odd has left Pico Mundo […]
Still Odd
Forever Odd, the second in the series of Odd Thomas books, doesn’t quite live up to the first. For one thing, there’s a noticeable lack of the 400 pound, six fingered man named Ozzy who, along with his evil cat Terrible Chester, is one of the better characters. He’s in this one for about half a scene, and no one blows up his cow this go around. Also, the bad guy in this book has come specifically to hunt down Odd because she wants him […]
Well, this was kind of terrible
Look, I know that Dean Koontz is hardly a literary genius, but I’ve been reading him since middle school and I enjoy his books. They can be repetitive, and once you notice what kind of themes and characters he likes to re-use, it’s hard to unsee that. But I like his flowery, occasionally babbling style, I like his over the top bad ass ladies, I’m a big fan of golden retrievers and I’ve truly enjoyed probably 90% of the books he’s written. The City, however, kind […]
“Odd”, Indeed
Did you know Koontz has written like, seven Odd Thomas books now? I know I’ve read the first two, maybe the third…. So I thought I’d reread the series from the beginning at get myself reacquainted with this…special…young man (especially since my library has the whole series on eBook!) “I’ve since discovered that many human beings need no supernatural mentoring to commit acts of savagery; some people are devils in their own right, their telltale horns having grown inward to facilitate their disguise.” So, Odd Thomas lives up […]
