Dildo cannons and silicone butts

October 24, 2017 by Lindzgrl 1 Comment

What The Hell Did I Just Read: A Novel of Cosmic Horror is the third in David Wong’s trilogy following the exploits of David Wong, his girlfriend Amy and his sidekick John—the first book was John Dies At The End and the second This Book Is Full of Spiders: Seriously Dude, Don’t Touch It. David Wong is the head editor of Cracked.com, the comedy website, and the comedic voice that made Cracked such a success is the foundation to all three books. I would describe […]

“Uh….weren’t we having a mutiny?”, and other tales…

May 21, 2017 by ingres77 2 Comments

Well, one other tale, really. After reading Fuzzy Nation on narfna’s suggestion, I quickly delved into the other Scalzi books that I had access to. The first, The Collapsing Empire, was just recently released and is the first in a trilogy (and his first book under a 10 year, 13 book contract that includes a sequel to Lock In and a new book in the Old Man’s War series). The second, Agent to the Stars, is his first novel, self published on his website in […]

This Kind of Read Like Someone’s Recounting of a Wacky Fever-Dream, and I Honestly Kind of Dig It

July 24, 2016 by Lisa Bee 1 Comment

You know when you’re dreaming and something absurd and surreal happens but your dream self is just like, “yeah, that makes sense”? That’s what the progression of this book and the characters’ reactions felt like to me. They just kind of rolled with everything, despite it being a ridiculous ride of the supernatural and things that don’t entirely make sense. A crossover between our world and another filled with monsters and other strange beings and seemingly arbitrary rules of what is possible and what is […]

This book also has a drone in it that just delivers burritos. That is the dream.

This was the best fart/poop/butt joke book collection I’ve ever read that also happens to have a plot. Despite it not being exactly everything I hoped it would be, this book had me about three pages in when the heroine (ordering fast food while sitting in her self-driving car) contemplates how did people ever “eat their car chili” if they had to keep their hands on the steering wheel. This girl clearly has her priorities straight. If the future allows me to eat car chili while cruising down […]

I want to go back and read this again for the first time.

So, I think I found a new favorite writer. The kind of writer that necessitates my active engagement whenever a new book is published. I mean, look, this book didn’t fundamentally rewire my brain. I’m not re-invigorated, or inspired to change my life. This isn’t like when I read Moby Dick last year. But this book was good. And John Dies at the End was just the right blend of chaotically eccentric and delightfully whimsical. And Futuristic Violence and Fancy Suits was charming, and fun, […]

Demonic boogaloo and the electric slide

February 2, 2016 by ingres77 6 Comments

This book is a hot mess. And I mean that in the best possible sense. *minor spoilers* There’s a dog that wanted half its body shaved so that it could steal food easier. She figured she wouldn’t be recognized that way. Ronald McDonald eats his own intestines. Jennifer Lopez, Morgan Freeman, and (maybe) Fred Durst are in this book – but not really. The main character, Dave, is bitten by a drug named “Soy Sauce” that John, Dave’s friend, got from a mysterious Jamaican. The […]
