Suffering on the high seas

The Wager by David Grann

December 30, 2024 by Sophia 1 Comment

I first saw The Wager (2023) by David Grann on Barack Obama’s Favorite Books of 2023 list. I’m a big fan of Obama, and I read a number of his recommended books every year. I also read The Killers of the Flower Moon by David Grann about five years ago. It was a deep dive into a little corner of history that I knew almost nothing about, and I found it very interesting. The Wager is also something of a deep dive into a little corner of history. The Wager was […]

Apparently, all I need in life is a pile of books, a fridge full of cheese and diet coke and a massive tent. The Clinic (Cate Quinn) ** Certified tough chick (™) Meg checks into an exclusive rehab clinic, not to treat her own burgeoning drug problem, but to discover what happened to her sister Haley, a famous actress who died on the grounds. The clinic claims suicide, but Meg doesn’t buy it and sets out to investigate what really happened.  I read this book […]

Lord of the Flies with Adults

The Wager: A Tale of Shipwreck, Mutiny and Murder by David Grann

CBR16 BINGO: Fiasco, because this mission to capture Spanish treasure was a fiasco from the get-go I’ve been putting off writing this review because, while The Wager seems to have been well researched and the writing is engaging, it left me feeling a bit tepid. Nautical history isn’t my usual jam, but I do love a good survival story (see Endurance for my favorite nautical tale and one of my all-time favorite non-fiction books). In the mid-18th century, Britain and Spain were engaged in the […]

Shipwrecked on Daddington Island: A Naval-Gazing Adventure

The Wager: A Tale of Shipwreck, Mutiny and Murder by David Grann

November 20, 2023 by Halbs Leave a Comment

David Grann does it again! Page-turning history, filled with interesting trivia, exploration of the borders of the human capacity for greatness and darkness, and pontificating on what it all means. He’s the best at doing all of it at once. This piece of non-fiction is mercifully paced – only 257 pages. Buy this book for all the history nerds and dads in your life. You are welcome; your holiday shopping is complete. The Wager has two meanings – first, the eponymous ship was part of a […]

Midnight Son – 4 stars An upcoming native Alaskan actor, Teddy Kyle Smith, vanishes into the wilderness after his mother’s death and, attacking the first men who come across him, leaves them for dead. But when he is finally captured, he has a bizarre story to tell – that of encountering the Iñukuns, a mythic lost tribe. An Audible original, this audiobook is executed in an interesting documentary format, incorporating interviews and clips from police interrogations and court testimony alongside narration. The case is not […]

A Deep and Dark Conspiracy

Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI by David Grann

August 9, 2023 by LittlePlat Leave a Comment

Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI was utterly infuriating. I read it in anticipation of the movie that’s set to be released in a few months, and I knew it wasn’t going to be a terribly happy story. But I felt myself getting worked up about it none the less.  The Osage once possessed a territory that covered much of modern-day Missouri, Kansas and Oklahoma. But encroaching expansion from the US government lead to the Osage being mostly displaced […]
