Were I to Pull Every Line that Made Me Gasp I Would be Quoting the Book in its Entirety

The Dark Dark by Samantha Hunt

January 7, 2020 by andtheIToldYouSos Leave a Comment

I’d lick my lips, slowly, letting my pink tongue dangle out of my black mouth a little just like some animal waiting by the side of the road for the driver who killed it to come back one more time and kill it again This collection is stitched together with muscle, sinew, and blood. Samantha Hunt writes in a way that tears apart beautiful language and forces you to read the story through twisted entrails like a time-forgotten seer. The tales are modern in theme […]

This is not a happy story, but hey- neither is The Little Mermaid.

The Seas by Samantha Hunt

December 19, 2019 by andtheIToldYouSos Leave a Comment

I devoured Samantha Hunt’s previous novel, Mr. Splitfoot, last year and it easily fell into my top 10 of the decade (If you have yet to come across Mr. Splitfoot then I implore you to check it out; it has everything you’ll ever need: ghosts! cults! comets!) but The Seas easily steals a spot among my favorites of all time. The Seas is slim, spare, and haunting.  I have always been drawn to tales of maritime peril, and while there is no shipwreck here there are […]

Pop the Classic

June 28, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

This is a take-off of the Buffy Summers story during the TV series, but forgets there was movie (as many fans do). Most of Sunnydale is there (Willow, Xander, Giles, Buffy’s mom) but has Buffy as an 8-year-old girl, just coming into her knowledge she is a slayer, instead of the teen she is during the series.   Actually, Buffy the Vampire Slayer: A Picture Book starts off with Buffy “now” doing what she does best (slaying vampires) and then flashes back to being eight […]

A popular thriller worth your time

January 5, 2018 by lowercasesee Leave a Comment

I couldn’t remember where I’d seen this book recommended and that made me I think understandably cautious. The general summary—it’s about the daughter of a female serial killer and her life after turning in her own mother—made me more cautious. But I gave it a go because ebooks from the library have made me much more freewheeling in my reading choices. And you know what, I’m glad I did. I think I was still reeling from My Absolute Darling (dear christ do not read that book). […]

You remember Alice? It’s a song about Alice…

Alice hated being interesting. (a couple of times throughout the book but p. 287 is where I recorded it.) I didn’t love it. I didn’t hate it. I’ll probably seek out the follow-up books, but I already know that the thing I think needs to happen–Alice becoming the Queen of Hearts–won’t.

Attractively Repulsive

January 2, 2017 by sabian30 Leave a Comment

An Exchange of Hostages by Susan R. Matthews (1997) When I read the blurb on the back about a surgeon who’s in training to be a High Inquisitor, someone who tortures people, I didn’t think I’d read much of the book before putting it down. Torturers? Inquisitors? A space-faring government called the Judiciary who looks for rebels and criminals under every rock and extracts “legal” confessions from them? Andrej, forced to become a fleet inquisitor to inherit his father’s title, is young, full of himself, and […]
